Tips

For use as the teacher is conferencing with students about their stories. Tell the students that the Who and Why creatures have some questions. For example, Why did your character go there? What did the character look like? Why did your character do that? How did the character feel? After several weeks allow the kids to make a pom-pom creature to use during editing.

Background

This project is meant to help students feel comfortable during writing workshops. As you meet with students to go over their stories, use these pom-pom creatures to guide the discussion.

Depending on what your students write, the "Who & Why" creatures could pose the following questions: What does your character look like? Why did your character behave like that? How does your character feel? These little creatures will put your students at ease—and make the writing process a lot more fun.

Tip: After several weeks, older students can make their own "Who & Why" creatures and use them as an interactive tool in small group writing discussions.
