Customer Reviews
Smithsonian® Science Kit Rock & Gem Dig is rated 2.5 out of 5 by 2.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from A fun, if messy, science activity My seven year old daughter likes the Smithsonian Rock and Gem Dig so much, this was the second kit she has purchased. There are real gems embedded in a block of chalky clay (not the Hope Diamond, obviously, but colorful and worth finding nonetheless). The main caveat is that breaking apart the block of clay to find the gems is a messy endeavor, so either do this activity outside or get a drop cloth to protect your floor and make cleaning up easier. The other concern is that the safety glasses included is a toy. It is marked as a toy, and we have never had a problem, but I would worry about creating a false sense of safety. If this issue concerns you, go to a science supply company and buy real safety goggles. The Smithsonian Rock and Gem Dig is a more than one sitting project, but an opportunity to teach patience and diligence is a good thing.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Poor product quality We were very disappointed in the Smithonian Rock n Gem dig. We have purchased one in the past and were very happy with it. My sons face was very excited he got ready I love the goggles but they are made for very lil kids to small god my sons face and after he started chipping away we gathered the smallest stones I have ever seen before I. This kit. We were very disappointed and the amount of stones were not correct how many were in the kit. These stones were ridiculously small in size not exciting to find since they changed size of the stones. My son was disappointed wanted same size ones he found in last box. Pretty disappointing.
