Project Instructions

  1. Cut out a foam pennant from the foam sheet. Use foam stickers or cut out symbols of contributions of the assigned person from the foam sheet.
  2. With markers, write the name of the famous African American on pennant.
  3. Glue symbols on pennant. Punch four holes down side of pennant as shown and weave wooden dowel through the holes.

Adult supervision is required at all times.

Background

Students have probably heard of Martin Luther King, Jr. or Oprah Winfrey. But what about George Washington Carver? Or Sojourner Truth? Kareem Abdul Jabar? Have the students read about famous African Americans and learn about the contributions these people have made to American society. Have students select an African American to feature on a pennant and then create the pennant. Display the pennants around the classroom.
