Hemp, 10 lb. (8 yards) – Brown
Chip Beads, 5" – Amber
Wooden Beads, 8mm (2)
Hemp, 10lb – Brown
Color Chip Beads, 2" – Amber
Rings, 14mm (2) – Silver
Fishhook Earrings (2) – Silver
Cut brown hemp to the following measurements: 4 yards (2), 1-1/3 yards (1) and 30" (1).
Fold 1-1/3 yard piece of hemp in half. Fold both 4 yard pieces in half. Measure 6" from one side of the 30" piece and fold at that point. Place all pieces together so folds match up. Unfold slightly and make one overhand knot at fold to hold pieces together and to mark the “center” of the strands.
Once again fold strands, with knot at top. Hold all the strands together and make one big overhand knot about ¾" from the center holding knot, creating a loop. Trim shortest piece (from the 6" strand) to 1". This ¾" loop will be the loop part of the necklace’s clasp.
Attach the loop of the necklace to a sturdy holder (such as the clip of a clipboard) so necklace can be easily assembled from top downward. You should now have 4 long hemp strands and three shorter hemp strands (and a 1" piece) hanging down from the last knot.
Position the longer strands so that two are on the far left and two are on the far right. Both strands together on the left will act as one “knotting” strand and both strands together on the right will act as the other “knotting” strand. The remaining strands in the center will be the “filler” strand (1" piece is to be worked in). Make a sinnet of 20 square knots (SQK).
For the first chip bead insert, after the last SQK, necklace will now break into two SQK sinnets. To do so, reposition the hanging strands so that one of the middle filler strands now moves over to the left side, another middle filler strand moves to the right side, and the last middle filler strand remains alone in the middle.
On left side, use each of the two longer strands as the knotting strands and use the shorter piece as the filler strand. Make a 14 SQK sinnet. Repeat on the right side, making another 14 SQK sinnet. On the lone middle hemp strand, slide amber chip beads (about 1" worth so length matches the two sinnets just made).
Rejoining Sinnets, place the left sinnet on top of the right sinnet, aligning the knotting and filler strands from one sinnet to the knotting and filler strands of the other. Use the two left strands together and the two right strands together as the knotting strands and use all the middle strands (including the one with the chip beads) as the filler strands. Make a 5 SQK sinnet.
For the second chip bead insert, repeat Steps 7 and 8, except make the two sinnets 26 SQK long and slide about 2¼" worth of amber chip beads (to match length of sinnets) onto the middle filler strand. Rejoin sinnets as directed in “Rejoining Sinnets” above.
For the third chip bead insert, repeat Steps 7 and 8.
Rejoin sinnets as directed in “Rejoining Sinnets” above except make the ending sinnet 20 SQK long (like at the beginning of the necklace). Collect all the strands and make one big overhand knot after the last SQK. Separate strands into two sets (4 strands in one set, 3 in the other). Knot one set ¼" from overhand knot. Knot the other set 1¼" from overhand knot. String one bead onto each set and make another knot just below the bead. Trim to ½". These beads, along with the beginning loop, are the clasp of the necklace.
The completed project measures 13".
Cut hemp to the following measurements: 30" (4), 16" (2) and 12" (2).
Fold two 30" pieces in half. Fold one 16" piece in half. Take one 12" piece, measure 4" from one end, and fold at that point. Hold all strands together, aligned at the folds. Attach by Lark's Head Knot to one silver ring (Quick instructions: slide fold through the middle of the ring about 1" and hold. Take all of the loose strands and thread through the loop created from the fold. Pull strands tight). Trim shortest piece (the 4" piece) to ¾".
Separate strands so 2 longer strands (these will be knotting strands) and one shorter strand (filler) are on the right and two longer strands (knotting strands) and one shorter strand (filler) are on the right (short piece can go either direction and should be worked in as a filler). The last strand should remain alone in the middle.
Make a 14 Square Knot (SQK) sinnet on either side. String 7/8" worth of amber chip beads on the middle strand.
To bring all strands back together, place the left sinnet on top of the right sinnet, aligning the knotting and filler strands from one sinnet to the knotting and filler strands of the other. Use the two left strands together and the two right strands together as the knotting strands and use all the middle strands (including the one with the chip beads) as the filler strands. Make 2 SQK.
Make an overhand knot under the last SQK. Trim ends to 1½" for a fringe. Attach fishhook earring to silver ring.
Repeat Steps 1-6 for second earring.
