Birthday Candle Scarf
Here's what the designer had to say, "Cheers to a fresh start and exciting new year! This 3-dimensional birthday candle scarf is a fun and quirky project to celebrate incredible beginnings all year round. Swap in your favorite color combos to create a distinctive birthday gift for a recipient of any age. You’ll love the humor and charming appeal of this unique, wearable soft-sculpture. For the more fashion-timid, you can turn this project into a giant plush toy by stuffing all the pieces with Poly-fil® before closing up your seams."

dc2tog: Double crochet two together tomake a decrease. [Yarn over, insert hook into next stitch, yarn over and pull through one loop, yarn over, and pull through two loops] 2 times. Yarn over and pull through all three loops.
hdc2tog: Half double crochet two together to make a decrease. [Yarn over, insert hook into next stitch, yarn over and pull through one loop] 2 times. Yarn over and pull through all fiveloops.
sc2tog: Single crochet two together tomake a decrease. [Insert hook into next stitch, yarn over and pull through one loop] 2 times. Yarn over and pull through all three loops.
Start by creating a circle for the bottom of the candle.
With White, make a magic circle or ch 3and sl st to 1st ch to form ring.
Rnd 1: Ch 2 and work 13 dc intoring. Sl st to 1st dc tojoin. (13)
Rnd 2: Ch 2 and work 2 dc into each staround. Sl st to 1st dc to join. (26)
Rnd 3: Ch 2 and work [2 dc in next st,1 dc in next st] 13 times. Sl st to 1st dc to join. (39) Do not break off.
Now you will work the main body of the candle. What creates the spiral stripe is a 4-stitch repeat, continuously spaced one stitch to the left of the same colored repeat in the previous round. Decreases and increases are used to lessen the blocky, staircase appearance of the stripes.
Rnd 1: Work this round in BLO. Sc2tog, 1 hdc in next st, then 2 dc in next st.[Pick up Aqua, work dc2tog, 1 dc, then 2 dc in next st. Pick up White, workdc2tog, 1 dc, then 2 dc in next st.] 3 times. Pick up Aqua, work dc2tog, 1 dc. Workingin BLO creates a nice edge all the way around the circle. Place a marker here, which you will refer to later. Now you will start to overlap rounds and begin your spiral. Work 2 dc into next st in both loops.
Rnd 2: Continue to work in both loops. [Pick up White, work dc2tog, 1dc, 2 dc in the next st. Pick up Aqua, work dc2tog, 1 dc, 2 dc in the next st.] Continue repeating this pattern to spiral your way up the birthday candle, until the desired length is reached. I made mine 30 inches long. End with a repeat in White, using the marker placed in Rnd 1 as the position to stop. Approximately 7 yards of White is needed to close the tube at the end with another circle.
On your final group of White dc’s, work1 dc, 1 hdc, 1 sc, and sl st in next st to join. Don’t break off White, but break off and weave in Aqua.
Now you will finish the top of the candle by making another circle.
Rnd 1: Work this rnd in BLO. Ch 2 and work [dc2tog, 1 dc] 13 times. Sl st to 1st dc to join. (26) Once again, the BLO should create a nice edge all the way around the circle.
Rnd 2: Continue to work in both loops.Ch 2 and work dc2tog 13 times. Sl st to 1st dc to join. (13)
Rnd 3: Ch 1 and work sc2 tog 6 times. Sc in last st. Sl st to 1st sc to join. (7) Break off leaving about 10 inches of yarn. Weave through last 7 sts, pull to close, break off. Weave inall your ends.
With Duckie, make a magic circle or ch3 and sl st through 1st ch to form ring.
Rnd 1: Ch 1, work 1 sc, 1 hdc, and 4 dc into ring. Don’t join rounds. (6)
Rnd 2: Work 6 dc evenly. (6)
Rnd 3: [2 dc in next st, 1 dc in nextst] 3 times. (9)
Rnd 4: [2 dc in next st, 2 dc evenly] 3 times. (12)
Rnd 5: [2 dc in next st, 3 dc evenly] 3 times. (15)
Rnd 6: [2 dc in next st, 2 dc in nextst, 3 dc evenly] 3 times. (21)
Rnd 7: [2 dc in next st, 2 dc evenly] 7 times. (28)
Rnd 8: [2 dc in next st, 3 dc evenly] 7times. (35)
Rnds 9-12: 35 dc evenly around. (35)
Rnd 13: [Dc2tog, 2 dc evenly] 9 times.(26)
Rnd 14: Dc2tog 13 times. 1 dc, 1 hdc, 1sc, sl st to next st. (13)
Break off leaving about 18 inches of yarn for sewing. The right side of your work should be the outside of the Flame.
With Hot Orange, ch 3.
Row 1: Sk 1st 2 chs and work 1 hdc in last ch. (1)
Row 2: Ch 2, turn. Work 2 hdc. (2)
Row 3: Ch 2, turn. [2 hdc in next st] 2 times. (4)
Row 4: Ch 2, turn. 2 hdc in next st. 2hdc evenly. 2 hdc in next st. (6)
Rows 5-9: Ch 2, turn. Hdc evenly across. (6)
Row 10: Ch 2, turn. Hdc2tog, 2 hdc evenly, hdc2tog. (4)
Row 11: Ch 2, turn. Hdc2tog 2 times.(2). Break off leaving about 18 inches of yarn for sewing.
With Duckie, unravel about 10 inches of yarn for sewing later.
Row 1: Sk 1st ch and scevenly across. (24)
Rows 2-6: Ch 1, turn. Sc evenly across.(24) Break off leaving about 10 inches of yarn for sewing.
- Optional:lightly stuff the flame withPoly-fil®. Use just enough to fill out the shape.
- Sew the orange Inner Flame to the larger yellow Flame near the base. This will become the front of your scarf.
- Sew the Flame to top of the Candle. 13 sts at the base of the Flame will match upwith tops of the 13 hdc2tog’s on the top circle of the Candle, which provides a good guide for sewing.
- On the back of the scarf, sew one end of the strap to the Candle about 3 inches from the top. Sew the other end of the strap to the Flame so that the strap lays flat, at about 3 inches from the tip of the flame.
- To wear your scarf, simply wrap the candle around your neck and pull the Flame-less end of your candle through the loop under the Flame. Now you’re on fire and ready to party!
