Material List

  • Vitrea 160 Glass Paints- #66 Black Tube Outliner
  • Glass Votive Candle Holder
  • Paper Towels and Cotton Swabs
  • Rubbing Alcohol or Glass Cleaner

Project Instructions

Step: 1

Clean the glass surface with rubbing alcohol or window cleaner to remove any grease or fingerprints.

Step: 2

Open the outliner tube: first unscrew the black nozzle and “pop” the metal tab using a sharp object (or the point of the nozzle). Screw the nozzle back onto the tube, and squeeze tube gently to paint. It is a good idea to then practice on a paper towel or palette.

Step: 3

Draw the stem lines onto the votive, by squeezing the tube gently as you pull the tube along the surface. Lines should be applied fairly thin, if they are too thick they could bubble during the baking process.

Step: 4

Next draw the small leaf designs on the stems and fill them in with paint. Scatter the leaves periodically around the votive - as seen in the photo.

Step: 5

Once complete, allow the piece to dry for 24 hours before baking.

Step: 6

It is not necessary to bake the candle holder for permanence, if it will not be placed in a dishwasher. To give the votive permanence for dishwashing, it requires baking in a standard kitchen oven.

Step: 7

After drying, place the piece in a cool oven on the middle oven rack, set the oven to 325 degrees Fahrenheit. Once the temperature has been reached, set the timer for 40 minutes. After baking is complete, turn off the oven and open the oven door to allow the piece to cool down gradually. Once cool, remove the piece from the oven. Now the paint is permanent, microwave safe and dishwasher resistant!

Remember that if you make a mistake or change your mind, the paint may be removed at anytime until it has been baked. Glass cleaner or rubbing alcohol work best.
