FINISHED MEASUREMENTS
Step: 2
Throw measures approximately 49"/124.5 cm diameter (at widest point)
Step: 3
GAUGE
Step: 4
One hex motif = 10"/25.5 cm diameter (point to point) and 9"/23 cm diameter (edge to edge)
Step: 5
Note: Gauge is not critical to this project. But, try to keep work relaxed and fabric as airy as possible.
Step: 6
STITCHES USED
Step: 7
Chain (ch), double crochet (dc), single crochet (sc), slip stitch (slip st), treble crochet (tr).
Step: 8

Step: 10
motif-join: After making sc in current motif, slip st in corresponding ch-1 sp of previous motif, ch 1.
Step: 11
corner-motif-join: After making sc in ch-2 corner sp of current motif, ch 1, slip st in corresponding ch-2 corner sp of previous motif, ch 1, sc in same ch-2 corner sp of current motif. Note: At a corner with a previous join, work new joins into the slip st of the first join made there, inserting hook under two strands each time.
Step: 12
NOTES
Step: 13
Throw is a large hexagon, composed of 19 hex motifs.
Step: 14
Each motif is joined to the edges of neighboring motifs as Round 8 (the motif joining round) is worked.
Step: 15
Refer to assembly diagram for placement of motifs and recommended order of assembly.
Step: 16
HELPFUL
Step: 17
To keep the project portable for as long as possible, make 19 hex motifs through Round 6 and weave in ends as you go. Then work Rounds 7 and 8 of each motif, joining motifs together as Round 8 is worked.
Step: 18
You can assemble the motifs in any order you wish. The designer recommends beginning at one edge, as follows: join the first column of 3 motifs, add the second column of 4 motifs, add the third column of 5 motifs, add the fourth column of 4 motifs, add the fifth column of 3 motifs (see assembly diagram).
Step: 19
HEX MOTIF 1
Step: 20
Notes:
Step: 21
Motif is crocheted in rounds with RS always facing.
Step: 22
The color is changed at end of Rounds 1-6.
Step: 23
The shells of each round are worked into the ch-sp of the shell 2 rounds below AND around the ch-sp between shells of the round directly below, enclosing the chains of both rounds.
Step: 24
With A, chain 5; join with slip st in first ch to form a ring..
Step: 25
Round 1 (RS): With A, ch 4, tr in ring, [ch 1, 2-tr Cl in ring] 11 times, ch 1; join with slip st in top of beg ch12 ch-1 sp. Fasten off A.
Step: 26
Round 2: Draw up a loop of B in any ch-1 sp, ch 3, dc in same ch-1 sp, [ch 2, sk next ch-1 sp, (2 dc, ch 1, 2 dc) in next ch-1 sp (shell made)] 5 times, ch 2, sk last ch-1 sp, 2 dc in same ch-1 sp as beg, ch 1; join with slip st in top of beg ch to complete first shell6 shells (corners). Fasten off B.
Step: 27
Round 3: Working around ch-2 sp between shells of Round 2, join C with slip st in any unworked ch-1 sp of Round 1; ch 4 (counts as first tr here and throughout), tr in same sp, [ch 2, working over ch-2 sp between shells of Round 2 work (2 tr, ch 2, 2 tr) in next unworked ch-1 sp of Round 1 (shell made)] 5 times, ch 2, 2 tr in same ch-1 sp as beg, ch 2; join with slip st in top of beg ch to complete first shell. Fasten off C.
Step: 28
Round 4: Working around ch-2 sp between shells of Round 3, join D with slip st in ch-1 sp of any shell of Round 2; ch 4, 2 tr in same sp, [ch 2, working over ch-2 sp between shells of Round 3 work (3 tr, ch 2, 3 tr) in ch-1 sp of next shell of Round 2 (shell made)] 5 times, ch 2, 3 tr in same ch-1 sp as beg, ch 2; join with slip st in top of beg ch to complete first shell. Fasten off D.
Step: 29
Round 5: Working around ch-2 sp between shells of Round 4, join C with slip st in ch-2 sp of any shell of Round 3; ch 4, 3 tr in same sp, [ch 3, working over ch-2 sp between shells of Round 4 work (4 tr, ch 2, 4 tr) in ch-2 sp of next shell of Round 3 (shell made)] 5 times, ch 3, 4 tr in same ch-2 sp as beg, ch 2; join with slip st in top of beg ch to complete first shell. Fasten off C.
Step: 30
Round 6: Working around ch-3 sp between shells of Round 5, join E with slip st in ch-2 sp of any shell of Round 4; ch 4, 4 tr in same sp, [ch 3, working over ch-3 sp between shells of Round 5 work (5 tr, ch 2, 5 tr) in ch-2 sp of next shell of Round 4 (shell made)] 5 times, ch 3, 5 tr in same ch-2 sp as beg, ch 2; join with slip st in top of beg ch to complete first shell. Fasten off E.
Step: 31
Round 7: Join F with slip st in ch-2 sp of any shell of Round 6, ch 1, sc in same ch-2 sp, [sc in next 5 tr; working over ch-3 sp between shells of Round 6 work 3 sc in ch-2 sp of next shell of Round 5; sc in next 5 tr, (sc, ch 2, sc) in ch-2 sp of next shell (corner made)] 5 times, sc in next 5 tr; working over ch-3 sp between shells of Round 6 work 3 sc in ch-2 sp of next shell of Round 5; sc in next 5 tr, sc in same ch-2 sp as beg, ch 1; join with sc in first sc to complete first corner90 sc. Do not fasten off F.
Step: 32
Round 8: With F, ch 1, sc in first corner sp, *[ch 1, sk next sc, sc in next sc] 7 times, ch 1, sk next sc, (sc, ch 2, sc) in next corner ch-2 sp; repeat from * 4 times, [ch 1, sk next sc, sc in next sc] 7 times, ch 1, sk next sc, sc in same corner sp as beg, ch 2; join with slip st in first sc. Fasten off F.
Step: 33
HEX MOTIFS 2-19
Step: 34
Refer to assembly diagram for placement of next motif. Work Round 8, working motif-joins (see definitions above) instead of chains, join side of motif to side of neighboring motifs, from corner to corner.
Step: 35
Round 8 (motif joining round): With F, ch 1, sc in first corner sp, *[ch 1 or motif-join, sk next sc, sc in next sc] 7 times, ch 1 or motif-join, sk next sc, (sc, ch 2 or motif-corner-join, sc) in next corner ch-2 sp; repeat from * 4 times, [ch 1 or motif-join, sk next sc, sc in next sc] 7 times, ch 1 or motif-join, sk next sc, sc in same corner sp as beg, ch 2 or motif-corner-join; join with slip st in first sc. Fasten off F.

Step: 37
Edging
Step: 38
Round 1 (RS): Join F with slip st in any free corner ch-2 sp of any motif at outer edge, ch 1, sc in same ch-2 sp, [ch 1, sk next sc, sc in next ch-1 sp] 8 times (to next corner), ch 1, sk next sc, work corner as follows:
Step: 39
If corner is joined to corner of another motif: sc in corner ch-2 sp on first side of join, ch 1, sk join, sc in corner ch-2 sp on other side of join.
Step: 40
If corner is free (not joined to any other corners): (sc, ch 2, sc) in corner ch-2 sp.
Step: 41
Work around entire outer edge of throw in this manner, end with sc in same corner ch-2 sp as beg, ch 1; join with slip st in first sc. Fasten off.
Step: 42
Using yarn needle, weave in ends. Block throw lightly, if desired.
