The easy knit-purl patterning on the yoke of the Birmingham Portugese Fisherman Sweater brings interest to the face while the stockinette tunic-length body is very elongating and slenderizing.

Naturally Caron Country (75% microdenier acrylic, 25% merino wool), 3 ounces/185 yards Color 0013 Spruce 16 (17, 19, 21, 23, 25) ounces

GAUGE
In stockinette stitch, using US size 9 needles, 18 stitches and 24 rows = 4”
STITCHES USED

Purled Ribbing
Row 1: * Knit 2, purl 3,* to last 2sts, knit 2
Row 2: Purl
NOTE: When working from the charts, begin working all rows from right to left, work the center stitch, then work back across the chart from left to right. Do not repeat the center stitch.
BACK
Ribbing: With size 7 needles, cast on 82 (92, 102, 112, 122, 132) stitches. Work in Purled Ribbing for 12 rows.
Body: Change to size 9 needles and work 108(100, 104, 104, 106, 106) rows stockinette, decreasing 1 st on first row. Work 4 rows garter stitch.
Shape armhole: Working in st st, bind off 4 sts. at beginning of next 2 rows. Begin chart where indicated for your size, keeping the first stitch in stockinette. When chart is complete for your size, bind off all stitches.
FRONT
Work as for Back. When you have completed the chart, bind off 21 (26, 32, 34, 38, 43)stitches at the beginning of the next RS row. Knit across. Bind off the same number of stitches at the beginning of the next row. Knit across the remaining stitches. This will form a turning ridge. Work in stockinette stitch on the remaining stitches for 6 rows. Bind off.
SLEEVES
Ribbing: With size 7 needles, cast on 47 (47, 47, 47, 52, 52) stitches. All sizes except 2X and 3X, work Purled Ribbing for12 rows. Sizes 2X and 3X, work Purled Ribbing for 11 rows and increase 1 stitch on row 12.
Shape Sleeve: Change to larger needles. Work even in stockinette stitch for 3 (1, 1, 1, 1, 1) rows. Increase one stitch each side every 8th (4th, 4th, 4th, 4th, 4th) row 12 (2, 8, 8, 6, 6,) times. Then increase one stitch each side every 0 (6th, 6th, 6th, 6th, 6th) row 0 ( 15, 12, 12, 13, 13) times. At the same time, begin pattern as indicated for your size on row 50 (50, 54, 54, 56, 56). Repeat rows 6-9 of chart, working increases into pattern. When all increases are complete, work even for 1 (3, 1, 1, 3, 3) rows. Bind off.
FINISHING
Block all pieces. Sew shoulder seams. Turn front facing to inside and sew in place. Sew in sleeves. Sew sleeve and side seams, leaving a 4” opening at each side. Work a row of single crochet along back neck and each side opening if desired.
