GAUGE
In Stockinette st, using US size 8 needles, 17 sts and 23 rows = 4”/10 cm
 

SITCHES AND TECHNIQUES USED
Stockinette stitch (St st)
Intarsia technique
Duplicate stitch, French knots and long stitch embroidery
 

BACK
With A, CO 51 (55, 59) sts.
Work in St st for 40 (44, 48) rows, approx 7 (7 ½, 8 ¼) inches.
Place a marker each end for armhole.
 

Armholes
Work 28 (30, 34) rows, approx 5 (5 ¼, 6) inches for a total of 68 (74, 82) rows.
 

Neck and Shoulders
(RS) BO 17 (18, 19) sts at beg of next 2 rows. Place rem 17 (19, 21) sts on a holder for neck.
 

FRONT
Work same as Back for 18 (22, 26) rows, approx 3 (3 ¾, 4 ½) inches. Beg with first row above tree trunk follow chart working tree motif in B on center 27 sts over next 30 rows (making sure to place markers at row 40 (44, 48) for armholes). When chart is completed, work 8 (8, 10) rows in A.
 

Neck
(RS) With A, k21 (23, 24) sts, sl center 9 (9, 11) sts on a holder for Front neck, join another ball of A and k rem 21 (23, 24) sts. Working both sides at once, dec 1 st at each neck edge every row 2 (3, 3) times--19 (20, 21) sts rem each side. Dec 1 st each neck edge every other row twice--17 (18, 19) sts rem each side. Work even until 68 (74, 82) rows from beg. BO rem 17 (18, 19) sts on each shoulder.
 

Neck Roll
Join one shoulder. With RS facing and A, pick up and k12 (14, 16) sts along side neck edge, k9 (9, 11) sts from front holder, pick up and k12 (14, 16) sts along other side neck edge and k17 (19, 21) sts from back holder--50 (56, 64) sts. Continue in St st for 13 rows. BO loosely. Join rem shoulder and neck roll seam.
 

SLEEVES
With RS facing and A, pick up and k42 (46, 50) sts between armholes markers. Continue in St st dec 1 st each end every 4 (5, 6) rows 9 (9, 10) times--24 (28 30) sts. Work even in St st until 53 (65, 75) rows from beg, approx 9 ¼ (11 ¼, 13) inches. BO.
 

FINISHING
Work D, work star with long stitch. With D, make 7 French knots on Front for ornaments, using photo as guide. With C, work 3 rows in duplicate stitch over center 3 sts for tree trunk, using photo as guide. Sew side and sleeve seams. Weave in ends.
