Project Instructions

Machine wash T-shirt in cool water without fabric softener. Dry.

Prepare the following dyes as instructed on packaging: Yellow, Turquoise, Fuchsia and Lime.

Lay shirt on a table which has been covered with plastic. Starting in the center of the shirt, vertically gather the shirt in pleats, starting at the bottom of T-shirt up to top of neck. Bind tightly on either side with zip ties, creating a center band. Tie an additional three zip ties on each side of the center including the sleeves.

Once the T-shirt is prepared, spray some water over shirt to dampen just a bit.

Begin in the center area and apply the Fuchsia dye followed by Turquoise on both sides of center. Squeeze some Turquoise into the Fuchsia to create Purple. Continue the Turquoise to the next tie then squeeze the Lime over parts of the Turquoise to create Green. Next to the Lime, squeeze Yellow keeping the color pure. Then repeat mixing colors going in the reverse; with Yellow blending into the Lime and Turquoise to make a Green, then true Turquoise blending into the Fuchsia for purple.

Carefully turn the T-shirt over and continue to saturate the colors. The goal is to create the Mardi Gras palette by mixing and letting the dye merge into the neighboring color.

Let dye set 6-8 hours.

With zip ties still on, machine wash with cold water and soap. Rinse and remove zip ties.

Dry T-shirt in dryer and press.

Tips

Create Purple stripes by allowing the Turquoise dye to blend into the Fuchsia dye. Create Green stripes by allowing the Lime dye to blend into the Turquoise dye.
