Project Instructions

  1. Glue two pom poms together. Glue a wiggle eye to each pom pom. Glue pom poms to a foam shape to help them stand up.
  2. Paint the styrofoam ball half. Glue on wiggle eyes. Use tooth picks to create spikes on the rounded side of the styrofoam.
  3. Fill out a chart to show the comparisons of the two creatures.
  4. Cut styrofoam ball in half.

Adult supervision is required at all times.

Background

Similes and metaphors can be difficult for students to distinguish. A simile is a figure of speech in which X is compared to Y, using the words as or like. A metaphor is X is compared to Y, and where X is said be like Y. Have students create pets – one that is made from soft, fuzzy materials and one that is made from prickly materials. Have students write descriptions of their pets using similes and metaphors. Give examples like "My pet is as soft as a pillow" and "My pet is a prickly pear".
