Do not use unbaked clay on unprotected furniture or finished surfaces. Start with clean hands and work surface area. Good work surfaces include wax paper, metal baking sheet, or disposable foil. Knead clay until soft and smooth. For best results, clean your hands in between colors. Shape clay, pressing pieces together firmly. Bake on oven-proof glass or metal surface at 275°F (130°C) for 15 minutes per ¼" (6mm) thickness. For best baking results, use an oven thermometer. DO NOT USE MICROWAVE OVEN. DO NOT EXCEED THE ABOVE TEMPERATURE OR RECOMMENDED BAKING TIME. Wash hands after use. Baking should be completed by an adult.
Begin by preheating oven to 275°F (130°C). Test temperature with oven thermometer for perfectly cured clay. For best results, condition all clay by running it through the clay dedicated pasta machine several passes on the widest setting. Fold the clay in half after each pass and insert the fold side into the rollers first.
Step 1 Making the star cane.
Using the pasta machine on the thickest setting, roll out a sheet of white clay.
Using the mini Star cutter, cut out 15 stars and stack them.
Using the Clay Extruder with the triangle disc, make one long triangle snake out of blue clay.
Using the Super Slicer, cut the triangle snake into five pieces that are the length of the star stack.
Press the blue triangle snakes into the grooves of the star stack with the pointed edge down against the star stack.
Roll out a sheet of blue clay using the pasta machine on a #3 setting and wrap around the cane.
Gently reduce the cane so that it is a long thin snake (approx. 3/16" diameter). Using the Super Slicer, cut off 50 pieces (approx. 5/8"L).
Press five cane pieces firmly together side by side. You will make six of these. Set aside
Press four cane pieces firmly together side by side. You will make five of these.
Roll out a thin blue snake (approx. 1/8" diameter). Using the Super Slicer, cut ten pieces that are 5/8"L.
Add the solid blue snakes to both ends of the pieces that have the four star snakes pressed together. Now both the five star snake pieces and the four star/two blue pieces will be the same width.
Using the pasta machine on #4, roll out a thin sheet of blue clay and cut into 12 rectangles, the same size as the star stacks (Approx. ¾"Wx5/8"H).
Assemble the star stacks and sheets of blue clay, starting and ending with the five star snakes.
Reduce the cane to an approximate size of ¾"Wx¾"Lx1"D
Using the Super Slicer, cut a piece off of the cane
Step 2 With the pasta machine on thickest setting, roll out two sheets of clay, one red and one white. Using the Super Slicer, cut out red and white pieces that are 1½"Wx1"L. Cut out one red and one white piece that is 1"Wx¾"L.
Step 3 Using the Super Slicer, cut out three red and white strips from the larger sheets that are 1/16" thick.
Step 4 Using the Super Slicer, cut out four red strips from the smaller sheet that are 1/16" thick. Cut out three white pieces from the smaller sheet that are 1/16" thick.
Step 5 Assemble the red and white strips together starting with a red small piece and ending with the red larger piece. Make sure the smaller strips are on the right hand side of the flag. Take the piece of the star cane from Step 2 and add it to the left side. Press all of the pieces together firmly.
Step 6 Using the pasta machine on a #3 setting, make a sheet of white clay. Using the Super Slicer, cut a piece that is 1¼"Lx3/8"W. Wrap it around the top part of the toothpick. Smooth edges and attach the flag clay piece. Press firmly together.
Step 7 Bake at 275° F (130°C) for 15 minutes per ¼" (6mm) of thickness. DO NOT USE MICROWAVE OVEN. DO NOT exceed the above temperatures or recommended baking time. Baking should be completed by an adult.
