Preheat oven to 275 F. Test temperature with oven thermometer for perfecly cured clay. Condition all clay by kneading until it's soft and smooth or running it through a clay dedicated pasta machine for several passes on the widest setting. Fold the clay in half after each pass and inswer the fold side into the rollers first.
Create a skinner blend from Purple to Blue. After blending the sheet, cut off a 2" wide strip and turn it ¼ turn. Press it back through the machine pressing it down to a 3. Do not fold! Just press the sheet back through so it becomes longer and thinner.
Starting with the Purple end, fold the end over 3/8". Then accordion fold the entire sheet back and forth.
To reduce the cane, press gently on all four sides with your fingers to release air bubbles. Then continue gently rolling over the sides with a clay roller. Reduce until the cane is about 1 ½" wide. Cut 2/3 of the cane off to use for large wings. Continue reducing the rest of the cane until it's about 1 ¼" or less for the smaller wings.
Cut off thick slices (3/16") for the wings from each cane. Lay them in front of you so the Purple end will be in the middle toward the body and the Blue will be the tips of the wings.
Finger shape the cane slices so the tips are pointed. Flatten the Purple ends so they will attach nicely to the body.
Make a teardrop shape for the body from Black. Place the body in the middle between the wings and make sure the wings attach securely. Decorate the top wings with White dots and the bottom wings with Black dots. Place a White dot on each side of the head.
Fill each dot with a smaller dot of the opposite color (White inside the Black dots and Black inside the White dots).
Color the skewer with the black marker, let dry. Wind the black wire around the skewer making a tight spiral. Leave at least a 1/4" tail at the end of the wire. Push the tail end of the wire up into the dragonfly body. Push the skewer up inside the tail.
Bake according to manufacturer's directions. Allow to cool
Always use an oven thermometer to ensure proper baking temperatures.
Oven should only be used by an adult.
