Background

Begin this lesson by asking the students: What does the minute hand on a clock do? What does the hour hand on a clock do? How many hours are in one day? What time do you get up in the morning on school days? What time do you get up on weekends? Discuss the importance of keeping track of time: showing up on time for football and baseball games, taking the casserole out of the oven before it is burned, celebrating birthdays! Prepare a large clock to display at the front of the classroom, and teach the students how to tell time by moving the hands to different positions. Have students practice themselves by coming to the big clock. To reinforce their learning, have them then make individual clocks and decorate the faces. For further practice, the students can take turns calling out times for the others to "record" on their clocks, by moving the minute and hour hands to the proper time.
