Project Instructions

Work the design on the black Aida using 3 strands of the 6-strand floss in the needle, in half cross stitch.

Learn how to stitch with DMC.

Half Cross Stitch
Half cross stitches are single diagonals. Usually they are listed under a separate heading in the color key and are indicated on the chart by a diagonal colored line. DMC developed a new technique called the Half Cross Stitch that you can use on aida fabric using DMC Pearl Cotton #5, or all six strands of DMC cotton Embroidery Floss.

Starting and Stopping
The easiest way to start a cross stitch piece is with the "waste knot" method. It is a temporary knot that will be clipped later, thus the name "waste knot". To begin, tie a knot at the end of the Floss on your needle. Pass the needle through the fabric from the front down, about one-inch away from the placement of the first cross stitch.

Bring the needle up through the fabric in the exact square you've selected as your starting point and work the first series of cross stitches over the thread to secure it on the back of the fabric. Carefully clip off the waste knot.

To continue stitching in the same area, re-thread your needle and simple run the needle under several stitches on the back side to secure the Floss, then resume stitching.

Using a single strand of the white 6-strand floss, couch the white Memory Thread in place. To do this, start by bending the end of the thread 1/4 inch to make a small tail, and insert the tail through the front of the fabric. Press the tail flat against the back of the fabric.

Couch around the outside edges of the ghost, around the mouth, and around the eye area.

Insert the opposite end of the Memory Thread like you did when starting, and tack both of the ends in place on the back side of the piece.

Finish the design as an ornament, or place it in a mini-frame.
