Dozens Of Ways To Decorate Styrofoam® Eggs

How do you like your eggs? A tisket, a tasket, Dow has dozens of ideas to fill your Easter basket. Generations of crafters have decorated eggs for the spring season, and Styrofoam® brand foam from The Dow Chemical Company has been a part of that tradition for more than 50 years.
In fact, with so many ways to decorate eggs, you might want to display your treasures year-round. And it's easy, too. To start, all you need is an egg of Styrofoam® brand foam and a thick, white craft glue or low temperature glue gun and glue sticks. Then, delve into your scrap bag, root through your kitchen cupboards, and dig into your junk drawer to find the decorative materials of your choice. Here are a few ideas to get you going:

Fabrics and Trims

Clean out your sewing basket or fabric stash and wrap your eggs in ribbons, rick rack, lace, yarn, embroidery floss or fabric strips. Create a "quilted" egg by using a sharp knife to insert or "tuck" fabric pieces into the foam egg.

In the Kitchen

Use up your old herbs and spices by rolling eggs in cinnamon, paprika, dill, sesame seeds, pepper, or mustard powder. Glue on dried kidney beans, black beans, white beans, coffee beans or split peas; add shine with a clear acrylic sealer. Clean, broken eggshells create a textured, crackled finish. For a quick kitchen inspiration, wrap eggs in aluminum foil.

Get the Kids Involved

Kids can have fun painting the eggs with acrylic craft paint, rolling eggs in glitter, or pinning on sequins and beads. Insert colored glue sticks in a low temperature glue gun and drizzle melted glue for a webbed finish (an adult should always supervise children using glue guns). For a punch of color, decoupage eggs with torn or cut up Sunday comic pages or comic books. For a porcelain-look, decoupage eggs with tissue paper, paper napkins, wrapping paper or fabrics.Cover the egg with your choice of coating (see Under Cover above) and top with a faux finish: crackle, patina, verdi gris, rust or gold foil.Cover eggs with paper maché, or smooth on a coat of acrylic spackling compound or plaster of Paris. For a smooth, sleek look, dip the eggs in white craft glue tinted with acrylic paint. Or, melt old crayons over low heat, let cool slightly and dip the eggs into the mixture for a glossy, colored finish. If glitz and glamour are your style, shop flea markets and garage sales for old costume jewelry. Cut apart the jewelry and glue the beads and baubles to the eggs of Styrofoam® brand foam. Or, pin and glue strands of pearls or beads around the eggs. Roll eggs in mini glass beads for a rich, glittery look.To capture the look of spring, glue dried, pressed flowers on the foam eggs; pansies are especially beautiful. Silk flowers are another easy choice. Select small flowers to match your color scheme, cut individual blossoms from the stems and glue to the foam eggs. For a scented touch, roll eggs in potpourri. On your next walk, gather feathers, pinecones, pebbles, birdseed, seashells, or sand to decorate your eggs.
