Getting Started with DMC Pearl Cotton (Size 5) skeins:

1.      Referring to Diagram 1, remove skein labels from each end of your Pearl Cotton skein and untwist the skein.

2.      Open skein into an oval shape and cut it in half at one end.

3.      Pull out one strand of Pearl Cotton from skein.

Hint:  When first learning to stitch, you may find it easier to work with a shorter length of thread, so simply cut this piece in half.

4.      Thread your needle and tie a knot at the end of thread.

Three basic stitches are used in hand embroidery thread embellishment:

Running Stitch, Back Stitch, Stem Stitch

Running Stitch:
Bring the needle up at A, down at B, up at C, down at D. Continue this pattern, keeping the stitches evenly spaced.

Back Stitch:
Bring the needle up at A, down at B, up at C, down at A. Continue making even stitches, forming a continuous line.

Stem Stitch:
Working from left to right, bring the needle up at A, down at B, up at C, down at D. Continue this pattern to create raised effect.

The stitches below provide interest and depth to your emboridery work. Add flair and fashion to everything you make...

French Knots:

Bring the thread out at the required position. Hold the thread down with the left thumb and wind the trhread twice around the needle (A). Still holding the thread firmly, twist the needle back to the starting point and insert it close to where the thread first emerged (see arrow). Pull thread through to the back and secure for a single French Knot or pass on to the position of the next stitch (B).

Lazy Daisy Stitch:

(also know as a Detached Chain Stitch)

Work in the same way as Chain Stitch (A), but fasten each loop at the center with a small stitch (B). This stitch may be worked singly or in groups to form flower petals.

Plain Couching Stitch:

A heavy thread or a group of threads are laid on the fabric. With another thread (usually of contrasting color), hold the heavy thread down with short stitches across it at regular intervals. Do not allow the heavy thread to pucker. This can be done on curved or straight lines.
