Europe: Maracas

Painted paper maché balls and pony beads make for simple maracas that you'll be shaking to the beat all day long. Maracas were originally made with dried gourds that were filled with seeds or pebbles and are used in pairs to make music.

Material List

  • Darice® Paper Maché Balls, 2½"
  • Creatology™ Dowel Rod, 3/8"
  • Craft Smart® Acrylic Paint – Orange, Green, Yellow and Blue
  • Paintbrush
  • Elmer's® Glue
  • Saw, Small
  • Creatology™ Pony Beads, Mini
  • X-ACTO® Knife

Project Instructions

Step 1 Cut dowel rod in two pieces, 4" long.

Step 2 Paint balls orange, let dry.

Step 3 Use additional colors to paint design on balls, and let dry.

Step 4 Make small hole in balls (parents to do this) with X-ACTO® knife large enough for dowel to fit snugly.

Step 5 Place mini pony beads into balls, then glue dowel into hole, and let dry.
