Project Instructions

  1. The students should collect fall leaves that have not dried out. Place the leaf, vein side up, under an 11" x 18" sheet of white paper.
  2. Color over the leaf with colored pencil so the shape becomes visible. Repeat several times using different leaves and colored pencils.
  3. Write, "I am thankful for . . ." on the paper with markers. Each student should finish the phrase however they like.

Adult supervision is required at all times.

Cut the piece of paper in half and make a windsock with the leaf rubbings.

Background

Every fall, deciduous trees lose their leaves. In fall, days get shorter and there is not enough light for trees to continue making food so the green color of the leaves disappear, and the once hidden colors like red, orange, yellow and even purple start to appear instead. Go on a leaf hunt and point out the various changes in trees and leaves. Collect leaves along your way.
