Remove provided cord and pages from book. Use the acrylic paint to pre-paint inside and outside of book. Paint as many coats as desired to make an opaque coverage allowing paint to dry between applications.
Create jelly roll canes in the following color combinations: Red with Pink, Purple with Pink, Yellow with Orange, Green with Bright Green. (Note: See below for instructions on How to Make a Jelly Roll Cane.)
Organize the cane slices into flowers that are made of six petals. When satisfied with flower shapes, press them into place on the front of the book. Roll a small ball of a contrasting color and press into the middle of each color.
Cut slices from the Green/Bright Green cane and place them randomly among the flowers for leaves.
Bake entire photo book as instructed in the Project Tip section below. As soon as the photo book is removed from the oven, gently place it on a heat resistant surface like a cookie sheet protecting your hands with oven mitts. Place a heat resistant weighted object like a baking dish on top of the book to help it stay flat as it cools.
When cool, re-assemble the book with papers and ribbon of your choice. Add adhesive crystals as desired.
How to Make a Jelly Roll Cane
Roll equal amounts of 2 colors to 1/8-inch thick sheets. Trim edges of colors so they are rectangular in shape about 3-inches x 4-inches.
Decide which color will be on the outside of the jelly roll and place it on the bottom with the 2nd color on top.
Gently roll over the top of the color slab with the acrylic roller to press out air bubbles.
Pinch up a lead edge between thumb and 1st finger. Roll the lead edge over the slab and continue rolling until the entire slab is rolled up into a cylinder.
Gently roll the cane to blend the overlapped edge onto the outside of the cane and to press any air out of the middle of the cane. To form the cane into a petal shape, gently pinch along the sides of the cane to make it a more teardrop shape.
Use a clay blade to slice 1/8-inch thick slices off each cane.
Repeat this process with the remaining combination of colors.
Use photo as a guide and follow manufacturer’s instructions for all products used.
Make sure to clean hands and tools before starting project.
Do not use unbaked clay on unprotected furniture or finished surfaces.
Knead clay for 2 minutes.
Start with lighter colors and work down to darker colors to avoid discoloring of the clay.
Bake on oven-proof glass or metal surface at 275º F (130º C) for 15 minutes per ¼-inch (6mm) of thickness. Do not exceed temperatures or recommended baking time.
Do not use in microwave oven.
Baking should be completed by an adult.
Wash hands after use.
