Project Instructions
Step: 1
You may wish to follow the detailed instructions and view the worksheets available in No. 9905 Botanicals for the Home instruction book.
Step: 2
Surface Preparation:
Step: 3
Sand any rough areas of the wooden welcome sign using a fine grade sandpaper.
Step: 4
Wipe away any excess dust using a tack cloth or moistened paper towel.
Step: 5
Background:
Step: 6
Use the FolkArt HD Texture Tool with the flocked head.
Step: 7
Apply a 50 cent size amount of Clear Medium onto the palette, along with Yellow Ochre, Berry Wine, and Burnt Sienna.
Step: 8
Load your Texture Tool with Clear Medium and brush into Yellow Ochre, then Berry Wine and a touch of Burnt Sienna.
Step: 9
Begin painting the wooden surfaces of the oval plaque and its holder, using random strokes and varying color to create interest.
Step: 10
Allow background to dry completely before transferring pattern.
Step: 11
Transferring a Pattern:
Step: 12
To transfer the pattern to the dry, prepared surface, loosely tape the pattern at the top to prevent it from slipping.
Step: 13
Slip a sheet of transfer paper between the pattern and the surface.
Step: 14
Re-trace the pattern lines using a stylus, pencil or a ballpoint pen.
Step: 15
Painting Instructions:
Step: 16
Use page 22, Palm Tree Worksheet of No. 9905 Botanicals for the Home as a painting reference.
Step: 17
Palm Trunks:
Step: 18
Double load the 3/4” Flat Brush with Yellow Ochre and Burnt Umber. Using the chisel edge of the brush, paint a wiggle stroke holding the brush so that the Yellow Ochre is to the bottom of the stroke.
Step: 19
Layer the rows from the bottom to the top. With each stroke upwards, paint the row smaller as you near the top.
Step: 20
Load the 3/4” Flat Brush with Clear Medium; add a touch of Licorice to one corner. Using the flat side of the brush and keeping the Licorice against the outer edge of the trunk, paint a cast shadow along both sides of the trunk.
Step: 21
Palm Fronds and Grasses:
Step: 22
Double load the 3/4” Flat Brush with Hauser Green Medium and Thicket. Using the chisel edge of the brush and leading with Thicket, paint the spines of each palm frond; painting from the top of the palm tree outwards.
Step: 23
Using the same brush and colors, pull thin fronds on each side of the spines. To create darker fronds, flip the brush to lead with the lighter color.
Step: 24
Paint the grass using the same brush and color combinations. Use more pressure to make the grass blades wider than the palm fronds.
Step: 25
Finishing Details:
Step: 26
Load the #10 Flat Brush with Hauser Green Medium and paint the words or numbers of your choice.
Step: 27
Load the #10 Flat Brush with Thicket and paint along the letters and numbers to create a shadow.
