Project Instructions

  1. Tear the edges of the paper and darken with crayons to look worn.
  2. Draw pictures of objects that represent modern life with the crayons on the paper.
  3. Crumple the paper to create the worn look of a cave wall.
  4. Complete the picture by filling in the crayon drawings with markers or crayons. Outline the pictures with a black marker for more definition if desired.
  5. Mount each group's project on the wall, piecing them together to create a "cave wall" in the classroom.

Adult supervision is required at all times.

Background

Ancient civilizations left behind drawings and murals to show us a little bit of what their lives were like. Show photographs of cave drawings, paintings on stone, etc. to the students and discuss what these tell us about the people living long ago. Answers may include: we know animals were hunted, we know about the games children played, etc. How are our lives different today? Answers may include: we travel in buses to school, we get our food from the grocery store, etc. Create a list of the scenes the students share about their lives. Explain to the class that they will be creating a mural to illustrate a day in their lives. Divide the class into small groups and assign them a specific area to focus on, such as kinds of transportation or the different foods we eat today. When the mural is finished, display the entire mural on the wall and have each group go up to their portion to share their "cave drawings" with the class.
