Project Instructions
- Place the cut matboard pieces in an arrangement that will make an interesting frame. The picture opening can be an unusual size. The picture will be cut to fit inside the small frame.
- Glue the arranged matboard pieces together.
- Arrange the buttons, puzzle pieces and other objects in a pleasing way before gluing the pieces to the matboard frame.
- Glue the objects to the frame.
- Glue 2–4 round magnets to the back.
- Have an adult cut the mat board into fun shapes.
Tips
Additional objects to add to the picture frame would include: acrylic jewels, buttons of choice, feathers, small toys, puzzle pieces, etc.The magnet frame can be made to hang or can be placed on an easel.
Craft Notes
Student will use matboard shapes (pre-cut by an adult using blunt scissors), buttons of choice and found objects to make a picture frame magnet.Adult supervision is required at all times.
Background
This frame makes a unique Mother's Day gift—and is a great way for students to display their geometry skills. Applying their knowledge of shapes and patterns, spatial reasoning and symmetry, students will design a frame that speaks a thousand words.First, have students compare and contrast the geometric shapes of the matboard pieces. Discuss the characteristics of each shape. Have students think about the different kinds of angles within the shapes and how the pieces could fit together to make an interesting design.
