Project Instructions

  1. Attach ribbon to the bottom half of the plastic egg with glue.
  2. Make the fuzzy chick by gluing two yellow pom poms together. Add two wiggle eyes and an orange construction paper triangle for a beak.
  3. Put the chick in the egg to hatch.

For additional educational value, also read a book with the students about how eggs hatch.

Background

A great project for the springtime! Read a book or watch a video on how eggs hatch. If you have an incubator at your school, obtain a fertilized egg and watch a chick emerge right before your eyes. Have students apply what they've learned by drawing the egg-hatching process: the egg, the cracking egg, and the emerging chick. The culminating craft activity is an excellent wrap-up: students will hatch their own model chicks and make the connection between the visual arts and life science.
