Project Instructions

Step: 1

Cut out patterns. The following pieces will be cut from the foam sheet (multiple pieces are shown in parentheses): house, steps, shrubbery, chimney top, house roof, entryway roof, shingles (5 rows), door, shutters (4), cat, mouse, window frames ( ¼-inch wide strips). Using double-sided tape, tape patterns to ½-inch foam sheet. Tape chimney base to 1-inch thick scrap. Using Xacto® knife or serrated knife, carefully cut out all pieces (if using serrated knife, wax knife blade with old candle first for easier cutting).

Step: 2

To Assemble:
Glue large roof on house and small roof over doorway.

Step: 3

Glue bottom row of shingles along edge of large roof, inserting four little foam wedges under front edge so roof angles out slightly. Glue on second and third rows of shingles.

Step: 4

Glue bottom row of shingles over doorway, inserting two wedges under front edge so roof angles out slightly. Glue on top row of shingles.

Step: 5

Trim edges to match rooflines.

Step: 6

Paint house light gray; paint roofs black. Using small, round paintbrush, draw cracks in mortar and add a spider web under entryway eaves. Highlight edges of shingles with light gray paint.

Step: 7

Cut window frame strips to fit around windows and across center of each window. Paint dark gray; let dry. Glue frames around windows.

Step: 8

Glue stairs together; paint brick red. When dry, glue in place.

Step: 9

Paint door brown; let dry. Glue lace to back of door, covering opening; cover back of door with black paper. Paint wooden bead black; let dry. Glue bead to door for doorknob. Glue door in place above steps.

Step: 10

Using pencil, draw lines on shutters, creating slats. Paint shutters dark gray; let dry. Paint shrubbery olive green; let dry. Glue shutters and shrubbery in place.

Step: 11

Glue chimney top to chimney; let dry. Using pencil, draw bricks on chimney. Paint bricks red, leaving mortar between the bricks unpainted. Glue to top of roof.

Step: 12

Gently round edges on cat and mouse with fingers; paint both black. When dry, add two white eyes to cat; glue in place on top step. Cut mouse ears from black paper and glue to mouse; add yarn tail. Glue on bottom step.

Step: 13

Roll into a ball a small scrap of STYROFOAM™ brand foam, making a spider body; paint black. Cut six legs from black paper; glue to spider. Glue to spider web.

Step: 14

Using pencil, make indentations in foam ball, creating a pumpkin shape. Paint orange; let dry. Paint face on pumpkin, using small round brush. Glue pumpkin on bottom step.

Step: 15

Roll up newspaper and glue to top step.

Step: 16

Cut out three ghosts from white paper; paint on faces. Glue ghosts to back of house, looking through windows. Cover backs of windows with black paper.

Step: 17

Tie a knot in ends of ribbon; push pins through knots. Insert and glue pins into top of roof, forming hanger.

With a few variations and your imagination, follow these instructions to create a Holiday House Wallhanging. For example, paint the house white and the roof red, sprinkle on crystal glitter, add a few touches of textured “snow”, and hang a wreath on the door.
