Project Instructions

Step: 1

SIZE
Directions are for 6 months; changes for 12, 18, and 24 months are in parentheses.
To Fit Chest: 17 (18, 19, 20)-inches.
Finished Chest Measurement: 18½ (19½, 20½, 21½)-inches.


Step: 2

GAUGE
8 sts = 4-inches; 8 rows = 4-inches in sc with larger hook. CHECK YOUR GAUGE. Use any size hook to obtain the gauge.


Step: 3

ABBREVIATIONS
ch = chain
inc = increase
mm = millimeters
sc = single crochet
st(s) = stitch (es)
[] = work directions in brackets the number of times specified


Step: 4

BODY (Worked in one piece to underarms)
With larger hook, ch 37 (39, 41, 43).


Step: 5

Row 1 (Right Side): Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across; turn - 36 (38, 40, 42) sc.


Step: 6

Row 2: Ch 1, sc in each sc across; turn.


Step: 7

Repeat Row 2 until 3½ (4, 4½ ,5)-inches from beginning, end by working a wrong side row.


Step: 8

Divide for Fronts and Back-Right Front


Step: 9

Ch 1, sc across first 8 (8, 9, 9) sc; turn. Work even for 2½ (3, 3½, 4)-inches, end by working a wrong side row.


Step: 10

Shape Neck
Slip st in first 3 (3, 4, 4) sc, ch 1, sc in next 5 sc; turn - 5 sc. Work even for 1½-inches. Armhole should measure 4 (4½, 5, 5½)-inches. Fasten off.


Step: 11

Back
With right side facing, attach yarn in next st of last long row; ch 1, sc in same st as joining and next 19 (21, 21, 23) sc; turn - 20 (22, 22, 24) sc. Work even until same length as Right Front to shoulder. Fasten off.


Step: 12

Left Front
With right side facing, attach yarn in next st of last long row; ch 1, sc in same st as joining and in each sc to end; turn - 8 (8, 9, 9) sc. Complete to correspond to Right Front, reversing neck shaping.


Step: 13

SLEEVES
With larger hook, ch 15. Work in sc same as for Body over 14 sc, shaping sides by inc 1 st each end of every 3rd row until there are 16 (18, 20, 22) sc. Work even until 5 (6½, 7½, 8)-inches from beginning. Fasten off.


Step: 14

With right side facing and smaller hook, work 1 row sc across lower sleeve edge.


Step: 15

FINISHING
Sew shoulder seams. Sew sleeve seams. Set in sleeves.


Step: 16

Neck Edging
With right side facing and smaller hook, attach yarn at right front neck edge; ch 1, work sc evenly to shoulder seam, across back, and down to corner of left neck edge; turn. Work 2 rows even in sc. Fasten off.


Step: 17

Button Band and Lower Edging
Row 1: With right side facing and smaller hook, attach yarn at left front neck edge; ch 1, work sc evenly down edge, 3 sc in corner, work sc across lower edge, 3 sc in corner, and work sc evenly up right front edge; turn.


Step: 18

Row 2: Ch 1, sc in each sc around, working 3 sc in each corner as before; turn.


Step: 19

Buttonhole
Row 3 (Work on right front for girls, left front for boys): Mark positions for 4 buttonholes on appropriate front. Working corners as before, ch 1, [sc in each sc to marker, ch 1, skip 1 sc] 4 times, sc in each sc to end. Fasten off. Weave in ends.


Step: 20

Sew on buttons to correspond to buttonholes.


Tips

Make sure buttons are sewn on very securely with sewing thread and needle so that baby cannot pull them off.
