Project Instructions

  1. Have students cut a piece of chenille stem as long as their feet.
  2. Curl one end of the chenille stem and add foam beads.
  3. Curl the other end of the chenille stem so the shapes won't fall off. Draw a face on your inch worm.

Adult supervision is required at all times.

Background

How tall is a giraffe? How long is a snake? Discuss with your students the different tools we use to help us measure distances and depths and quantities. Measuring cups, oil dip sticks in a car engine, yard sticks, etc. For this lesson, the students will be measuring length. With students working in pairs, have them place a piece of paper under their foot and trace the size of their shoe on the paper. After each student has traced his/her shoe, have the students measure the length of their shoes. Have them guess how many "shoes" they will need to measure the length of a table? How many for a window? How many for the length of the classroom? Have them record their numbers on a chart and discuss the reasons why the numbers may be so different from group to group (inaccurate measuring, different shoe sizes, etc.).
