Knit yourself a Banana!

Instead of inserting a zip, graft the two long edges of the banana skin together and pull together and pull up the yarn tightly to shorten the seam, thereby causing the banana to bend. Before completing the seam, stuff the banana skin.

Abbreviations
inc 1 = knit into front and back of same stitch

 

Banana skin (make 1)
With Size 3 needles, cast on 12 sts in yellow yarn.
Row 1 (RS): (knit 2, purl 1) 4 times.
Row 2: (knit 1, purl 2) 4 times.
Rows 3–6: Rep rows 1 and 2 twice more.
Row 7: (inc 1, inc 1, purl 1) 4 times [20 sts].
Row 8: (knit 1, purl 4) 4 times.
Row 9: *(knit 1, inc 1) twice, purl 1, rep from * 3 times more [28 sts].
Row 10: (knit 1, purl 6) 4 times.
Row 11: (knit 6, purl 1) 4 times.
Rows 12–60: Rep rows 10 and 11, ending with row 10 to start the next knit row.
Row 61: (slip 1 stitch on to the right-hand needle without knitting it, knit 1, pass the slipped stitch over, knit 2, knit 2 stitches together, purl 1) 4 times [20 sts].
Row 62: (knit 1, purl 4) 4 times.
Row 63: (slip 1 stitch on to the right-hand needle without knitting it, knit 1, pass the slipped stitch over, knit 2 stitches together, purl 1) 4 times [12 sts].
Row 64: purl 2 stitches together 6 times [6 sts].
Row 65: knit .
Row 66: purl.
Rows 67–70: Repeat rows 65 and 66 twice more.
Cast off knitwise; cut yarn, leaving a long tail for sewing up.

Banana (Make 1)
With Size 2 double-pointed knitting needles and ivory yarn, cast on 12 sts and divide between three needles.
Rounds 1 and 2: knit .
Round 3: (knit 1, inc 1) 6 times [18 sts].
Round 4: knit.
Round 5: (knit 2, inc 1) 6 times [24 sts].
Round 6: knit .
Round 7: (knit 7, inc 1) 3 times [27 sts].
Rounds 8–64: knit ; or until work measures 7" from beginning.
Round 65: (knit 7, knit 2 stitches together) 3 times [24 sts].
Round 66: knit.
Round 67: (knit 2, knit 2 stitches together) 6 times [18 sts].
Round 68: knit.
Round 69: (knit 1, knit 2 stitches together) 6 times [12 sts].
Round 70: knit. Break yarn and thread through remaining stitches.

Making Up
Insert a 7" zipper in the banana skin. Stuff the banana and close the end by threading yarn through all the stitches. Pull up tightly and fasten off. The finished banana measures approximately 8¼" long and 2" in diameter.
