Project Instructions
Step: 1
Cover the 9” wreath of STYROFOAM® brand foam with brown paper. Cut ten 2” x 20” strips of brown paper. Fold each in half lengthwise. Using hot melt glue, attach the end of the first strip onto the back of the wreath on the diagonal. Wrap the strip around and around the wreath, overlapping each row a bit and keeping the strip tight and smooth against the wreath. When the strip is finished up, glue the end to the back of the wreath. Continue wrapping the strips until the wreath is entirely covered.
Step: 2
Prepare pieces of brown paper in a number of different textures and finishes:
Step: 3
Apply a light coat of brown shoe polish wax to the front side of a small piece of grocery bag. Allow the wax to dry and then gently buff the paper with a soft rag to give the paper a soft sheen.
Step: 4
Wax another section of paper as described above but after buffing the paper, apply a coat of glossy Mod Podge with a paint brush.
Step: 5
Run several smaller pieces of brown paper through a crimper or use store-bought crimped paper.
Step: 6
Using the pattern, cut out four poinsettias from polished brown paper. Fold the flower in half three times to make creases between the petals. Cut four 1” x 5/8” strips of plain brown paper for the flower centers as well. Cut fringe on a 1” side. Roll the opposite edge around a barbeque skewer (or similar tool) to form a thin tube and glue. Use an Exacto blade to cut a tiny X in the center of the poinsettia and push the rolled end of the fringe through the front of the flower to the back. Secure with a dot of glue. Spread the fringe out from the center with your fingers.
Step: 7
Cut out six of the round petal flower from glossy paper. Punch out six ½” circles from polished paper. Pinch each petal in half to make a slight crease down the center and then give the petals a curl by pulling the back of the petal over the side of the skewer. Glue a circle in the center of each flower.
Step: 8
Cut out 10 leaves from crimped brown paper.
Step: 9
Cut seven strips of glossy paper 1 ¼” x 2 ½” to make fringed pom poms. Cut very thin fringe along one of the short sides of the strip. With the shiny side facing in, roll the un-fringed edge into a thin tube around the end of a skewer. Glue in place. Curl the individual fringes out from the center over the side of the skewer. Curl some fringe tighter than others for variety.
Step: 10
Cut two strips of plain brown paper ½” x 8” to make a bow. Fold over the top end of each strip to form a loop and glue in place. Cross the two strips and glue into a bow.
Step: 11
Using the photo for a placement guide, glue the four poinsettias onto the wreath form. Glue on five round petal flowers on next and then glue leaves under each side of those flower. Glue the bow on at the bottom of the wreath and with the last flower glued on top. Glue on the fringed pom poms.
Step: 12
Cut a strip of paper 1” by 4”. Fold into thirds lengthwise and make into a loop. Glue the loop onto the top back of the wreath for a hanger.
