Calypso Afghan

SIZE
About 40 x 48 in. (101.5 x 122 cm) 

GAUGE
One Square = 8 x 8 in. (20.5 x 20.5 cm). BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR GAUGE. 

STITCH EXPLANATIONS

Beg Cl (Beginning Cluster) Ch 4, *(yarn over) twice, insert hook in ring and draw up a loop, (yarn over and draw through 2 loops on hook) twice; rep from * 2 more times, yarn over and draw through all 4 loops on hook.

Cl (Cluster) *(Yarn over) twice, insert hook in ring and draw up a loop, (yarn over and draw through 2 loops on hook) twice; rep from * 3 more times, yarn over and draw through all 5 loops on hook. 

SQUARE 1 (make 4)

With A, ch 8; join with sl st in first ch to form a ring.

Rnd 1 (RS): Beg Cl, (ch 4, Cl) 7 times, ch 4; join with sl st in top of beg ch – 8 clusters and 8 ch-4 sps at the end of this rnd. Fasten off A.

Rnd 2: Join B with sl st in any ch-4 sp, ch 3 (counts as dc), 3 dc in same ch-4 sp, 4 dc in next ch-4 sp, (ch 6, 4 dc in next 2 ch-4 sps) 3 times, ch 6; join with sl st in top of beg ch – 32 dc and 4 ch-6 sps at the end of this rnd.

Rnd 3: With B, ch 3 (counts as dc), dc in next 7 dc, *(3 dc, ch 3, 3 dc) in next ch-6 sp, dc in next 8 dc; rep from * 2 more times, (3 dc, ch 3, 3 dc) in last ch-6 sp; join with sl st in top of beg ch – 56 dc and 4 ch-3 sps at the end of this rnd. Fasten off B.

Rnd 4: Join C with sl st in any ch-3 sp, ch 3 (counts as dc), (dc, ch 3, 2 dc) in same ch-3 sp, *dc in next 14 dc, (2 dc, ch 3, 2 dc) in next ch-3 sp; rep from * 2 more times, dc in last 14 dc; join with sl st in top of beg ch – 72 dc and 4 ch-3 sps at the end of this rnd. Fasten off C.

Rnd 5: Join D with sl st in any ch-3 sp, ch 1, (2 sc, ch 1, 2 sc) in same ch-3 sp, *sc in next 18 dc, (2 sc, ch 1, 2 sc) in next ch-3 sp; rep from * 2 more times, sc in last 18 dc; join with sl st in first sc – 88 sc and 4 ch-1 sps at the end of this rnd. Fasten off D. 

SQUARE 2 (make 4)

Make same as Square 1, working Rnd 1 with B, Rnds 2 and 3 with C, Rnd 4 with D, and Rnd 5 with E.

Edging

From RS, join H with sl st anywhere in outside edge.

Rnd 1: With H, ch 1, work sc evenly spaced around outside edge, working 3 sc in each corner; join with sl st in first sc. Fasten off H.

From WS, join F with sl st in any sc.

Rnd 2: With F, ch 1, sc in each sc around; join with sl st in first sc. Fasten off F.   

Weave in ends.

From RS, join yarn at side seam of left armhole, sl st loosely along front armhole edge to top edge, ch 33 (34, 35, 36, 37), sl st in top of Back and sl st along back armhole edge to first sl st, join with sl st in first sl st. 
Rnd 1: Ch 1; working in back loops only, sc in each sl st and ch around; join with sl st in first sc.
Rnds 2-5: Ch 1, turn, sc in each sc around; join with sl st in first sc.
Fasten off. Rep around second armhole.

Lower Edging
From RS, join yarn at side seam of lower edge and work 1 rnd of sc.
Weave in ends.

Second Half

Edging
