With A, cast on 34 (40) sts.

Work in garter st (knit every row) for 1 inch [2.5cm], noting 1st row is WS and ending with a WS row. Break A.

Step: 7

With MC, work 2 rows in stocking st.

Make Instep
Next row: K22 (26). Turn. Leave rem 12 (14) sts on first st holder.

Step: 9

Next row: P10 (12). Leave rem 12 (14) sts on second st holder.

Step: 10

Next row: K10 (12). Next row: P10 (12).

Step: 11

Rep last 2 rows 10 (12) times more. Break yarn and leave all sts on right-hand needle.

Proceed as follows:

With RS of work facing and MC, K12 (14) from first st holder. Pick up and knit 10 (12) sts along side of instep. K10 (12) sts of instep. Pick up and knit 10 (12) sts along other side of instep. K12 (14) sts from second st holder. 54 (64) sts.

Beg with purl row, work 5 rows in stocking st. Break MC.

With A, work 2 rows in stocking st.

Shape Sole
1st row: (RS). K2tog. K23 (28). (K2tog) twice. K23 (28). K2tog.

Step: 17

2nd and alt rows: Knit.

3rd row: K2tog. K21 (26). (K2tog) twice. K21 (26). K2tog.

Step: 19

5th row: K2tog. K19 (24). (K2tog) twice. K19 (24). K2tog.

Cont in same manner, dec 4 sts every following alt row to 26 (32) sts. Cast off.

Finishing
Sew back and sole seam. Sew on buttons on side of booties (see picture).
