Lion Brand® Homespun® Yarn 3.4 5 7 8
Good to work with terrible wear This yarn is great to work with, works up fast, and looks great when done. I have made three throws with this yarn and will never use it again. The first two throws have worn horrible. Pills all over them and very fuzzy after washing. Washed on delicate and blocked to dry. The third throw I had to quit half way thru because the yarn was so inconsistent. One skein fuzzy and then thin and then normal. After looking back at the half done throw, I decided to unravel the whole thing. I have tried to call the Lion Brand company two times and been turned over to an answering machine. Leave name and information and calls never return. I will never use the yarn again at any price. May 12, 2015
My current favorite yarn I love this stuff. It is perfect for making amigurumi, especially for octopi, when you don't want your stitches to show and you'd rather have a texture instead. It's very soft, and the colors are amazing, especially the ones that tend to stripe a little. The only downside is that sometimes it tends to split a little and get caught when you're trying to pull the hook through, but since it's so fuzzy and irregular, it doesn't really show if you end up with a bit of extra caught in a different stitch here and there. I don't know that I would call it expensive, but I've seen the price go up quite a bit in the last few years with no increase in size, so I usually buy it when it's on sale now. April 20, 2015
Loom knit an infinity scarf Let me start by saying I don't crochet or knit with needles, I just recently learned to knit on a loom. My second project I used this Homespun yarn and I was happy with the results. It's a bulky yarn so you can't really see the stitch work but that was fine with me as it didn't matter for my project. It is super soft and warm and loved the Claret color. January 21, 2015
Not a great yarn While this yarn has a very soft feel that would be quite nice for scarves and cowls, I would never recommend this yarn to anyone. A friend purchased a skein of this and asked me to make her ear warmers with it. I tried but found the yarn was extremely difficult to work with. I am a medium tension knitter - not tight and not loose - and found that no matter how loose I tried to keep the tension on the yarn as I fed it to my needles the yarn eventually buckled up every time. It is wound so loosely that it was impossible for me to maintain tension while knitting without it buckling. I put the yarn down and picked up a different yarn to make her ear warmers. While this yarn seems very inviting, has beautiful colors and is soft to the touch, I would never purchase it. It is just too difficult and frustrating to work with, January 15, 2015
Great for Making Cowls I just started using Lion Brand's Homespun and Homespun Thick & Quick for cowls. Very loose & fluffy. I thought I'd have a problem with yarn splitting. There is no such issue when I use a plastic crochet hook (instead of metal). Rich colors. Great color variation on the finished product when using multicolored skeins. January 5, 2015
New knitter, Love this stuff I'm a new knitter (taught myself how a few months ago) but I love this yarn. Its super soft, and so easy to work with. I can see where in cases that you'd want a lot of definition it might not be suitable, but otherwise its great. Had very little issue with splitting unlike some other yarns. December 20, 2014
Beautiful, versatile, knit or crochet The color mixes in Homespun are alone a compelling reason to use it. Certainly for home decor of any kind (except heavy-use upholstery), there's a color way for it in Homespun. And the home decor aspect does not & certainly should not take away from all the apparel uses for this yarn! Hats, scarves and sweaters... I've made so many simple, beautiful, raglan pull overs and cardigans with Homespun. Many were in plain Stockinette stitch with ribbing because it's so easy when knitting in the round, and Homespun provides all the visual texture needed or wanted, really. However Seed stitch really matches and enhances this yarn's intrinsic texture, I think. Homespun looks really great in Garter stitch! The all-Garter stitch "Tomten" Jackets for babies and toddlers (from the classic by Elizabeth Zimmerman, "Knitting Without Tears)" look fantastic in Homespun. I think Homespun's texture and color mixes look best in simple, clean shapes and stitches. Certainly you could not expect good "stitch definition" from Homespun, so fancy stitch patterns can be really wasted and (imho) defeat the purpose of having a yarn like Homespun with these texture and color combinations. I love the drape of the knitted Homespun fabric, and am sure I haven't yet even remotely exploited this yarn's full potential. Normally I only knit with non-synthetic yarns, i.e. 100% wool, alpaca, cotton, linen, etc. However, Lion Brand Homespun was love at first sight. It's also a solid value, and I hope I'll be knitting with it for decades to come. A couple of tips, or concerns, especially for a beginner. Use knitting needles that don't have the sharper, pointier tips because this yarn does have a real tendency to split stitches. Keep an eye out for this because it's just easier to do because of the structure of Homespun. Not a big problem, it's easy to avoid. Also, I recommend having more of your stitch and row markers handy, whether you buy them or make/improvise homemade ones. The texture & color blending of Homespun can make it very hard to clearly see and count your stitches and rows, leading to frustration and frogging. Using markers liberally with this yarn makes for happier knitting & crocheting and fewer mistakes. I hope Lion Brand keeps this classic around for decades to come. :-) November 16, 2014
