Background

Maps are not only tools for navigation but are also considered works of art. Old maps from certain time periods are valuable in special collections in a museum or library. In the early days of sea travel, mapmakers drew images of dangers such as sea serpents, and mermaids on their maps. Today maps (through contour lines) can show us the elevation/height of landforms: these are called topographic maps. Other maps show us street names and important buildings in a city. Review the terms compass rose, scale and legend with your students. Explain to them that they will now create a map of their bedroom at home. They must include a compass rose and a legend, and draw their room to scale.
