Project Instructions

  1. Using 10 foam shapes of your choice, write the numbers 1-10 on the center of the foam shapes with marker. (Write only one number on each foam shape.)
  2. Glue each foam shape to a craft stick with craft glue.
  3. Place the crafted math sticks in can hug for storage.

Tips

Substitute wooden clothespins for craft sticks if desired.

Craft Notes

Use themed foam pieces such as stars, sports, flowers, or bears to make a set of numbers on sticks. Call out an equation from a flashcard and the student must find the stick with the correct answer on it. It's a great idea for centers!

Adult supervision is required at all times.

Background

2+2 and 6-4 can get tedious. Writing calculations is important but get kids energized with a little "active" math. First have students decorate craft sticks or wooden clothespins. Call out addition and subtraction problems and have students hold up the correct number of crafts sticks or clip the correct number of clothes pins to their chair. Be sure to check each student's count to ensure every student is grasping the math.
