Project Instructions

Step: 1

Cover work surface with plastic trash bags. Slit sides and bottom of bags then open for more coverage.

Step: 2

Wash shirts in washer then spin dry. Place damp shirts on prepared work surface then crumple following instruction sheet.

Step: 3

Wearing gloves from kit, fill dye bottles with water then shake till thoroughly mixed - about 1 minute each.

Step: 4

The dye will be used at half strength, to achieve this, pour half of dye from bottle into plastic container then refill bottle with water. Squeeze this diluted dye onto shirt squeezing and turning fabric until dyed. When bottle is empty, pour in other half of dye from container, add water, mix, then continue dyeing. Repeat steps with remainder of shirts. Cover and let set 4 - 6 hours.

Step: 5

Wash in washer with a small amount of laundry soap then dry in dryer.

Step: 6

Dress:

Step: 7

Cut one t-shirt just under sleeve across shirt. Cut 4” from hem off another, only top will be used.

Step: 8

Match cut ends, right side to right side. Add a line of glue between each piece at cut edge and press together to secure. Let dry. Turn right side out, creating a smooth seam.

Step: 9

Place dress on Fashion Form and smooth. To make stripes, position strips of tape across dress so each stripe will be about 2” wide. Run a fingernail along tape edge to prevent seepage.

Step: 10

Squeeze a large puddle of Ebony Soft Fabric Paint on foam plate. Dip dry sponge brush in paint and brush on an even coat between tape. Remove tape and let dry - a blow dryer will speed this step. Flip over dress and repeat step on other side matching up stripes at sides. Let dry.

Step: 11

Cut off one sleeve from a dyed shirt and paint Ebony. Let dry. Set aside for hat.

Step: 12

To create pocket, cut a 5 ½” square from a dyed sleeve having a hemmed edge as one side. Glue three cut edges to back. Glue pocket on dress, leaving hemmed edge open, referring to photo for reference.

Step: 13

Slip a piece of scratch paper in pocket. Use disappearing felt pen to write words. Start flow of Black 3-D Paint on paper towel using an even pressure on the bottle for a smooth line. Trace over letters. Let dry.

Step: 14

Use scissors to make a small snip at hem on top of sleeve and bottom side of dress. Attach safety pin to end of ribbon, thread through sleeve hem, slightly gathering fabric. Tie a bow and trim ends. Continue with other sleeve and edge of dress.

Step: 15

Hat:

Step: 16

Cut two strips of cardstock 2” by 10”. Tape ends together forming a ring.

Step: 17

Cut a strip of dyed fabric 6” x 21”. Fold strip in half lengthwise, right side out. Lay cardstock strip in crease of fabric. Apply a thin line of glue to inside edge of paper and press fabric into place overlapping ends. Trim excess fabric from glued edge. Apply glue to outside cut edge of fabric then fold to inside and press to create a finished edge.

Step: 18

Lay covered circle on black painted fabric. Use a pencil to trace a circle 1” larger. Cut out.

Step: 19

Working in small sections at a time, apply glue to inside edge of hat. Press a section of fabric circle into glue and adjust, as needed referring to photo for reference. Hold in place where needed with small pieces of masking tape. Continue with remainder of hat adjusting fabric to fit. Let dry and carefully remove tape.

Step: 20

Belt:

Step: 21

Cut a 5” x 24” (length will change for size needed) strip of dyed fabric. Fold into thirds lengthwise and glue cut edge in place forming a tube.

Step: 22

Insert belt ends over ends of tube with an overlap of 1” to inside. Glue end in place and hold with tape till dry.

Step: 23

Leggings:

Step: 24

Cut two 12” x 16” rectangles from dyed fabric, having hem of shirt being one of the 12” sides. Place lengthwise cut sides right side to right side forming a tube. Apply a thin line of glue along inside cut edge and press in place forming a seam. Let dry then turn inside out.

Step: 25

Apply glue around unfinished edge of tube and fold ½” to inside creating a finished edge.

Step: 26

Man’s Shirt:

Step: 27

Place T-shirt on Fashion Form. Use tape to mask off 2” strips across shirt. Run fingernail along all edges to prevent seepage.

Step: 28

Fill in stripes with Ebony Soft Paint using a dry sponge brush. Remove tape.

Tips

Use Fashion Form to prevent any seeping of paint to backside of t-shirt.
