Project Instructions

Preparing the Setting

Step 1 Cut piece of masking tape approximately 10" long. Fold in half (long ways). Using ruler, mark center of masking tape with small dot.

Step 2 Line up the masking tape so that the dot is directly at the bottom-center of cabochon.

Step 3 Pull masking tape upwards so it is hugging the outside of the cabochon and mark the tape where the wire meets at the top of the pendant. You should now have three dots on the tape.

Step 4 Lay masking flat. Using a ruler, measure the center, (between top and bottom dots), and mark tape. Repeat on both sides. This will be used to identify where you will bind the wire.

Step 5 Cut wire in lengths as outlined above.

Step 6 Straighten all pieces with your hands so they are lying flat.

Step 7 Lay the (two) longer 22ga wires on the table and place the 20 gauge piece in the center. Line up wires and tape ends to hold all three pieces in place. You should have a bundle of (three) wires lying next to each other.

Step 8 Place the bundle of wire next to marked masking tape, lining up the center of your wire with the middle dot on the tape.

Step 9 With a Sharpie(R), transfer all dots onto your wire, (bottom center; two sides; top).

Step 10 Take your 24ga ‘binding wire’ and make a small bend on the end, (180 degree bend). This should resemble a hook on the end of the wire.

Step 11 Slide the 24ga wire under your wire bundle and hook it directly over the center dot.

Step 12 Hold the hook tightly in place using chain nose pliers and begin to wrap the 24ga wire around wire pack 12 times. IMPORTANT: Each wrap should be tight and touching the previous wrap. Be sure to start and end your wraps on the same side of the wire bundle.

Step 13 Carefully trim ends and tamp down using chain nose pliers. No ends should be sticking out from the bundle.

Step 14 Repeat the step above on both side dots. Again, be sure the start and end the wraps on the same side as the previous ‘binding’. The sides will need only six wraps

Step 15 After completing each wrap, use chain nose pliers to adjust wire until each is straight and flat. Remember all wraps should be touching and tight.

Step 16 Place the center ‘binding’ at the bottom of the cabochon and gently wrap the wire pack around the stone, forming the same shape as the cabochon.

Step 17 At the top-center of the cabochon cross the wires. These should meet at the dots you previously made. With chain nose pliers, bend wire ends, (up), on 90 degree angle. The cage should be the shape of your cabochon and the wires should be bent up.

Step 18 Remove original masking tape and tape all six wires together at top of cabochon.

Forming the Bail

Step 1 Using 24ga wire form a hook, and begin to wrap the wires starting close to the pendant and working toward the end of the wire. Tightly wrap four times. DO NOT CUT THIS WIRE.

Step 2 Remove masking tape.

Step 3 You now have three wires in the shape of your cabochon, six wires standing straight, and your excess 24ga binding wire.

Step 4 Where wires are bound at the top of the cage, find the two wires that are from the middle of your wire bundle. These will remain in the upward position.

Step 5 Bend (four) outside wires away from the center, (two on each side), and push the remaining 24 gauge wire aside.

Step 6 About ¼” above the binding, use your chain nose pliers and bend the two center wires 90 degrees away from you.

Step 7 Using chain nose pliers, bend another 90 degrees downward towards the cage, leaving approximately ¼" between bends. This should resemble the end of a square and the wire ends are pointing down. (Make sure both wires remain same shape and size when bending.)

Step 8 Trim these two wire ends evenly, and just below the 24ga binding.

Step 9 Make small and slight upward curl on the tip of each wire. This will help secure the wire when you complete the next step.

Step 10 Press the curls so they are touching the original binding.

Step 11 Using the remaining 24ga wire, secure the ends of the bail by tightly wrapping this wire around the slightly curled up wire ends. Wrap four or five times, or until the bail is secure. NOTE: You should always stop your 24ga binding wire on the sides of the design so sharp edges are away from the skin. You may reinforce this wire by using chain nose pliers. Once securely in place, cut excess 24ga binding wire.

Step 12 Find the back of the cage. This should be the side with the curled ends used to finish off your bail. Between each binding gently bend bottom wire in towards center. Repeat on all four locations. These wires will hold the cabochon in place, preventing it from falling out of the cage.

Step 13 Press cabochon into setting.

Step 14 Gently repeat Step 12, bending two top wires toward center, (see below for the picture), forming top of the cage. The cabochon should now sit securely into the setting.

Step 15 Once Cabochon is securely in place, you may finish off your pendant using the remaining four top wires.

Step 16 Take the two wires closest to the center and bend upward. Slide each wire through the holes on the back of the Art Panel. Using your round nose pliers make small loop at end, securing the Art Panels into place. The Art Panel should sit in front of the pendant bail.

Step 17 You should now have two remaining wires on either side of the bail. Using the round nose pliers, make a small loop on each end.

Step 18 Using chain nose pliers begin the roll wire downward, forming a flat swirl design. Continue until all wire is rolled.

Step 19 Pull swirl to front center of the cabochon.

Step 20 Repeat with remaining wire. You should have two swirls sitting directly under the Art Panel.

Step 21 Secure all loose pieces by placing small glue dots behind the swirls, the Art Panels, and at the end of the binding wires.
