Start with clean hands and work surface area. Good work surfaces include wax paper, metal baking sheet, or disposable foil. Knead clay until soft and smooth. For best results, clean your hands in between colors. Shape clay, pressing pieces together firmly. Bake on oven-proof glass or metal surface at 275°F (130°C) for 30 minutes per ¼" (6 mm) thickness. For best baking results, use an oven thermometer. DO NOT USE MICROWAVE OVEN. DO NOT EXCEED THE ABOVE TEMPERATURE OR RECOMMENDED BAKING TIME. Wash hands after use.
Begin by preheating oven to 275°F (130 °C). Test temperature with oven thermometer for perfectly cured clay. For best results, condition all clay by kneading with your hands till smooth and elastic.
Step 1 Form eight to ten balls of clay, varying in size from ½" diameter to 1¼" diameter.
Step 2 Shape the balls into cone shapes with flat tops. With the wide pointed sculpting tool, pierce nearly all the way down the point, forming the throat of the flower.
Step 3 Again with the wide pointed tool, begin shaping and ruffling the petals on the front.
Step 4 Now ruffle and shape the back of the flower.
Step 5 With the finer point tool, add more defined lines from center outward on the front petal side.
Step 6 Repeat with all the balls of clay, forming flowers of various sizes. Shape and arrange the flowers so that they will lie flat.
Step 7 Bake as directed above.
Step 8 Mix about 1 teaspoon of Translucent Liquid Sculpey™ with one drop of blue ink. If desired, mix a second color slightly lighter or darker.
Step 9 Mix about ½ teaspoon of Translucent Liquid Sculpey™ with a drop of green ink. Dab the green mixture on the bottom/back side of the flower to color the calyx. Cure with a heat gun or in the oven. Note: If using a heat gun, the Sculpey® can be set by aiming the heat gun at it. If using the oven, apply thin enough so that the Sculpey® will not drip during baking. Cure each color of the Sculpey® separately.
Step 10 Continue with the front and back sides of the flower petals with the blue mixtures. Allow the Translucent Liquid Sculpey™ to settle more thickly in the “veins” and at the edges of the petals. Cure with a heat gun or in the oven.
Step 11 String the flowers on three lengths of leather lacing. Loosely braid the lacing, string two strands through one flower, nest the flowers and pearls as desired. Secure the flowers and pearls with glue and/or by knotting the lacing. Finish the ends by knotting the lacing and gluing it into the end caps after inserting a head pin. Form loops with the head pins and add a clasp.
