Project Instructions

Getting Started

  • Do not use unbaked clay on unprotected furniture or finished surfaces.
  • Start with clean hands and work surface area.
  • Good work surfaces include wax paper, metal baking sheet, or disposable foil.
  • Knead clay until soft and smooth.
  • For best results, clean your hands in between colors.
  • Shape clay, pressing pieces together firmly.
  • Wash hands after use.

Begin by preheating oven to 275°F (130°C). Test temperature with oven thermometer for perfectly cured clay.

Step 1 Using yellow clay, make the following pieces:

  • Make four 1"Lx5/16" thick clubs for legs. Flatten the round end to make the feet. Using the toothpick make two lines into each one for the toes.
  • Make one 3½"Lx½" thick log. Pull one end into a point for the tail. Round the other end and make it thinner for the head. Using the plastic modeling tool, cut out a mouth.

Step 2 Using red clay, make the following pieces:

  • Eight ½" triangles for the back spikes.
  • Four ½" tapered teardrops for the tail spikes.
  • One 3/8" flattened ball for the tongue.

Step 3 Using brown clay, make two 1/16" balls for the pupils of the eyes.

Step 4 Using orange clay, make the following pieces:

  • Two 1/8" flattened balls for the eyes.
  • (22) 1/16" balls for the spike spots.

Step 5 Assemble the Stegosaurus as shown. Press the legs to the sides of the body. Press the spikes onto the back and end of the tail. Add the tongue, eyes and pupils to the head. Add the spots to the spikes.

Step 6 Baking should be completed by an adult. Bake on oven-proof glass or metal surface at 275°F (130°C) for 15 minutes per ¼" (6mm) thickness. For best baking results, use an oven thermometer. Allow to cool when finished.
