Project Instructions

Use photocopier to enlarge all patterns (download below) 150%. Cut out paper Body pattern with X-ACTO® 8" Scissors. Trace (outside lines) onto Elmer's® Foam Board, twice, to make two body shapes. Use an X-ACTO® Gripster® Knife (with new blade) and Self Healing Cutting Mat to cut Foam Board. (Hint: Score lightly first and then press more firmly to cut deeper, with several passes of the Gripster® Knife. Replace blade often.) Set aside one piece that will be the Body back.

Use Scissors to cut out center oval on paper Body pattern. Trace oval onto other Foam Board Body, that will be Body front. Cut out opening in Foam Board using same tools.

For younger children, simply tape Body pattern onto felt and cut out. Then use Glue Tape Runner to attach to Foam Board pieces. Older children may want to wrap felt around Body shapes using the following instructions.

Place paper Body pattern on Black felt and use transparent tape to hold. Use Scissors to cut felt 1 1/2" away from outside edge of pattern. (Note: Wait to cut inside opening in felt until instructed to do so.)

Place felt onto work surface. Use CraftBond™ Glue Tape Runner to apply a few lines of Glue Tape on Foam Board Body front and flip over, centering adhesive side of Foam Board down onto felt. Press to stick, keeping in same position.

Before wrapping felt around outside of Foam Board, it's important to wrap inside opening first. Use Glue Tape Runner to apply adhesive all along edge of opening in Foam Board Body front. Use Scissors to make small "X" through felt in center of opening. Cut out approximately 3" oval. Make small cuts, from edge of felt oval to 1/8" out from Foam Board edge (to help ease in wrapping around edge.)

Gently pull felt "wedges" around edge of Foam Board to top, sticky surface and press onto adhesive, working on opposite sides to stretch evenly. After adjusting wedges as needed to make a smooth oval opening, use a glue gun to more permanently attach felt wedges around center opening, clipping off points if desired. (Note: Do not finish outside edge of frame until instructed to do so.)

For tummy, set paper Body pattern onto White felt and cut approximately 1/2" larger than opening in pattern. Position and use Glue Tape Runner to attach White felt to Back Foam Board Body (Back has no opening). Use Glue Tape Runner to attach front and back Bodies together so that White felt shows in opening. (Note: Black felt will still be loose along outside.)

Place frame, front-side-down, onto work surface. Use Glue Tape Runner to apply adhesive on back, around outside edge of Body. Use scissors to make snips about every 1/4", going from edge of felt to 1/2" from Foam Board edge. As with inside opening, pull felt "wedges" to back of Body and press onto adhesive, alternating sides to keep it stretched evenly. (Note: Due to bulkiness of felt, use scissors to trim away small triangles of felt so that felt doesn't have to be overlapped too much.) Permanently secure with a glue gun, helping trim away excess felt as needed.

To cover back, tape paper Body pattern onto Black felt and cut along outside lines, (same size felt shape as Foam Board Body, but do not cut opening.) Hot glue a felt piece onto back, covering raw felt edges.

Use scissors to cut out patterns of Wing, Foot and Beak. Tape wing on Black felt and cut out. Repeat for second Wing. Apply Glue Tape to curved edge of wing. Hold it up next to Body to determine placement and press in place. Carefully apply hot glue to contact points to secure. Repeat for other wing.

Similarly, cut one Beak and two Feet from Orange felt. For foot, apply Glue Tape to straight edge and hand-gather, making approximate 3/4" folds. (Tip: Or use needle and thread to gather edge.) Use a glue gun to attach to Body. Repeat for other foot. For Beak, apply tape and gather straight edge of Beak. Position and use a hot glue to attach to face, folding outside corners under for more rounded look. Position and use a glue gun to attach wiggle eyes.

For Easel, trace pattern onto scrap Foam Board and cut out. To make hinged flap, cut along dotted line, cutting only through top paper and foam, leaving back paper intact. Use glue gun to glue cut side of hinge flap to back of frame. Then, cut out Oval pattern. Place on photo and trace. Cut out and use CraftBond™ Foam Mounting Tape (for added dimension) to attach photo to center of Penquin.
