Project Instructions

  1. The teacher should make a poster board template for the students to trace.
  2. Have the students trace the template onto poster board with a pencil and cut out. (Teacher may do this before hand to use the poster board more efficiently.)
  3. With a pencil, draw a brick pattern on the triangular faces, leaving the square base blank.
  4. Go over the brick pattern lines with 3-D fabric paint and let dry.
  5. Teachers, help cut a chenille stem into four equal pieces and glue a piece onto the top point of the blank side of each triangle as shown. Let dry.
  6. Fold triangles upward into a pyramid. Fasten the sides closed by twisting the chenille stems together.

Background

Pyramids were an important part of Egyptian culture. Built over tombs or crypts, pyramids took many years to build. Inside the pyramids were tunnels and chambers that housed the mummified remains of important Egyptian citizens along with household goods, food, jewels and other items of importance to the deceased inhabitant of the pyramid to take with them to the underworld. Discuss with students how the pyramids were built, where they are and how large they are. Explore what types of artifacts have been found in Egypt's pyramids and what these artifacts have taught us about Egyptian culture. When students understand why the pyramids were built, have them build their own pyramids. Once the pyramids are built, have students discuss what important artifacts they would put in their pyramids, why, and what the artifacts demonstrate about our culture today.
