Background

Air is essential to plant, animal and human life. Although we cannot see the air around us, we would notice it if it wasn't there anymore. We'd have trouble breathing! Have the students blow on their hands. Air can be felt! Go outdoors and have the students feel the air on their faces and their hair. Ask them to notice what other things are moving in the air. After coming back inside, make a list of the things they observed. Then have the students make a pinwheel and notice the effect of a shallow breath on the pinwheel. What happens when they use a strong breath on their pinwheels?
