Project Instructions

  1. Fold and cut blue construction paper in half. Draw pictures of foods we eat that are planted in soil. To create two identical shapes, cut pictures out of half folded pieces of construction paper.
  2. Use marker to draw in details.
  3. Glue shapes and letters to label each card on to blue pieces, making 2 of each for the memory game.

Adult supervision is required at all times.

Background

Discuss how soil is important to plants. Soil holds water, contains minerals and other nutrients and it also provides support for roots and stems. Explain to the students that plants can grow in all types of soil but that weather and temperature and chemicals can all affect soil. Have several types of soil in glass jars on display and have the students talk about what plants might grow in these different soils. After discussing the characteristics of soil, have the students draw pictures of all the foods we eat that come from plants: What leaves do we eat? (spinach, lettuce) What roots do we eat? (carrots, beets, onions, etc.) What fruits do we eat? (bananas, apples) What seeds do we eat? (beans, peas, nuts) Display the students' drawings around the room.
