Project Instructions
To Create Solar System Display
Step 1 Cut out an oval shape from cardboard about 11" diameter.
Step 2 Mark center dot and draw nine ovals around the center point from small to large. Make a dot on each oval for planet placement.
Step 3 With needle, poke a hole in each dot.
Creating the Planets
Step 1 Create planets starting with the smallest.

Step 2 Pluto: Using orange clay, roll a 5/8" ball.
Step 3 Mercury: Lightly mix red clay and white clay to get a marbled look. Roll a 3/4" ball.
Step 4 Mars: Using red clay, roll a 7/8" ball.
Step 5 Neptune: Using yellow clay, roll a 1-1/8" ball.
Step 6 Venus: Using white clay, roll a 1-1/8" ball.
Step 7 Earth: Lightly mix blue, green, and white clay to get a marbled look. Roll a 1-1/4" ball.
Step 8 Uranus: Using blue clay, roll a 1-1/2" ball.
Step 9 Jupiter: Lightly mix red, blue and green clay to get a marbled look. Roll a 2" ball.
Step 10 Saturn: Lightly mix green and yellow clay to get a marble look. Roll a 1-1/8" ball. Make a coil from white clay and add around the ball for rings.
Step 11 Sun: Lightly mix red, orange and yellow and roll a 2-1/2" ball.
Step 12 With wire, poke hole through each planet. Place planets on a clay dedicated baking sheet. Bake according to instructions above. Allow to cool completely.
Creating the Solar System Model
Step 1 Cut fishing line into nine pieces. Tie knots in one end of each length and pull knotted fishing line through each planet.
Step 2 Tie other ends through holes in cardboard circle in this order: Sun in center; Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto around edge.
