Project Instructions

  1. Cut out hearts from one of the foam sheets. Glue wiggle eyes onto the heart and use a marker to add the rest of the face.
  2. Cut out foam shapes. Decorate the foam heart with these foam shapes.
  3. Glue chenille stems on for legs. If desired, curl the bottom of the "legs," as shown. Glue a flex straw at the top of the heart to use as a handle.

Tips

Try making snowmen, bunnies, cats, dogs, or any other character puppets from foam sheets.

Craft Notes

Adult supervision is required at all times.

Background

Using favorite children's poems or songs, have students listen closely to the words. Lead a discussion about poetry. What are the elements of poem? What makes words rhyme? What is rhythm? Have students clap out syllables and make up their own rhyming words. After working with several existing poems and/or songs, have students write their own rhyming poem. Then, have students create a puppet that will help them recite their poem to the class. Using the puppets will help students feel comfortable sharing their work.
