Start with clean hands and work surface area. Good work surfaces include wax paper, metal baking sheet, or disposable foil. Knead clay until soft and smooth. For best results, clean your hands in between colors. Shape clay, pressing pieces together firmly. Bake on oven-proof glass or metal surface at 275°F (130°C) for 30 minutes per ¼" (6 mm) thickness. For best baking results, use an oven thermometer. DO NOT USE MICROWAVE OVEN. DO NOT EXCEED THE ABOVE TEMPERATURE OR RECOMMENDED BAKING TIME. Wash hands after use.
Begin by preheating oven to 275°F (130°C). Test temperature with oven thermometer for perfectly cured clay. For best results, condition all clay by running it through the clay dedicated pasta machine several passes on the widest setting. Fold the clay in half after each pass and insert the fold side into the rollers first.
Step 1 Create the body color. Mix all of the Burnt Umber, Beige, Raw Sienna and Copper together (this mix will be referred to as the body clay throughout the rest of this tutorial). Blend together until you get the color that you like, leaving varying shades of each clay color visible.
Step 2 Form a tight ball of aluminum foil for the body and the head. The body foil ball should be somewhat oblong shaped and considerably larger than the head. It should be approximately 2" in length; the head is about 1" and is egg shaped. Squeeze the foil together until tightly packed to prevent air bubbles from forming in your sculpture. Cover each foil ball with the body clay. If air pockets form, gently release them with a needle tool, press and smooth completely.
Step 3 To complete the body, mix some of the body clay with some of the black clay. Cover larger foil ball with this color, about ¼" thick.
Step 4 Make these dark spots and attach in random sizes and locations on the body by gently pressing them on. Make a small cone-shaped piece of the body clay to form the tail (use a small piece of craft wire to give extra strength). Attach to the body and smooth and blend the edges.
Step 5 To create the feet and legs -- cut four lengths (all the same length: about 1¾" to 2") of thick craft wire. For each foot, form four small balls of the body clay. The middle “toe” and the back of the foot should be larger than the side toes. Press the toes together in a semicircle and then press to the foot ball back. Blend each ball together. Take the craft wire and bend a small “hook” on one end of each wire piece. Gently insert the bent end into each foot. Bake the feet for 15 minutes in the preheated oven. Cool completely.
Step 6 Add four small rectangle pieces of body clay to the underside of the dog body for the thighs. Poke holes through the rectangles up into the dog body. Insert one leg/foot section into each of the small rectangles. You can then blend the edges of the rectangle pieces to smooth into the body. You can either gently pull and smooth the thigh clay down to meet the feet or leave a small portion exposed so that the feet can be swiveled as pictured. For added security, before attaching the legs, put a coating of Bake and Bond on the wire. Set the body aside.
Step 7 To form ears for the head piece, take small thin pieces of aluminum foil and cover with very thin pieces of the body clay. Insert an 18" piece of craft wire into the end of each ear. Poke a hole with a needle tool on either side of the top of the head. Insert each ear. Make small crescent moon shaped pieces of body clay to put around the back and sides of each ear. Smooth and blend into the ear and head. Position and fold ears as desired.
Step 8 Make two small balls for the eyes. Using the small ball stylus, poke holes in the center of each eye for the pupils. Attach to the top of the head ball. Using four small pieces of the body clay, create two half moon shapes for the upper eyelids and two smaller half moons for the lower eyelids.
Step 9 Use a needle tool or one of the 5-in-1 sculpting tools to form accent lines to the face and blend in the edges of the eyelids. Make a small rounded triangle from the black clay to form the nose. Press just below the eyes. Draw with a needle tool mouth lines below the nose. Insert a tongue made from pink clay.
Step 10 Attach the head to the body using a toothpick or thick wire inserted from the head to the body. Wrap the neck with a color of your choice to make a collar. Roll the color thin and added a texture to it for detail. Make the collar closure with a small rice-shaped piece of the black clay and another tiny line of black.
Step 11 Bake in the preheated oven as directed above. You’ll want to prop your dog up in the pan with foil and polyester or cotton fiberfill. Once cooked completely, apply a patina of acrylic paint (use a dark color like Black Cherry). After a couple of minutes, gently wipe excess paint off. Allow to dry. For further enhancement, apply Sculpey(R) gloss glaze.
