Prepare Sunshine Orange dye following manufacturer’s directions. Wet three T-shirts in hot tap water and immerse in dyebath for 30 minutes, stirring constantly. Rinse as directed.
On one of the size 2X T-shirts, use Tangerine dye to paint diagonal stripes radiating from the neckline, creating pumpkin ridges. Place wet T-shirt on a table covered with plastic and insert plastic or cardboard between the front and back to prevent dye from bleeding through. Paint both sides of shirt. Let set 20 minutes. Rinse and launder all three T-shirts.
Slip one 2X T-shirt inside the other, wrong sides together. Match and pin neckline and shoulder seams together. Machine stitch ¼” from neckline stitching and next to both sides of shoulder seams.
Lay shirts on a table and match up hemlines. Using a ruler, draw a straight line and cut away hemline stitching. Pin cut edges together forming a tube; machine stitch close to edge. Note: This creates a pillow case effect for holding the fiberfill.
To make an elastic casing at the bottom edge: Fold stitched bottom edge 5/8” to the inside; press and pin. Stitch close to raw edge, leaving a 1 ½” opening at side. Using a safety pin, insert elastic into casing. Try on T-shirt and gather bottom edge with elastic to create pumpkin effect. Trim excess elastic and stitch ends together. Stitch opening closed.
For green neckline leaves: Draw and cut ten 3” wide and 3” high triangles from green felt. Pin and stitch green triangles to ribbing around neckline, overlapping points to fit.
For sleeves: Try on pumpkin T-shirt to determine length and angle of sleeves. Cut and stitch as desired.
To create pumpkin shape: Stuff fiberfill between the two T-shirts through the sleeve openings. Try on to adjust shape.
Instructions for Pumpkin Hat
Draw a 17” diameter circle on Medium dyed T-shirt; cut out two circles of fabric. Cut one 17” circle from batting. Pin batting to the wrong side of one circle; stitch ¾” from edge. Trim away excess batting to eliminate bulk.
Pin wrong side of other fabric circle to batting. Stitch all layers together over previous line of stitching.
To make an elastic casing: Fold and press outer edge of fabric circle ¾” to one side; pin. Stitch close to raw edge, leaving a 1 ½” opening. Using a safety pin, insert elastic into casing. Try on hat and gather elastic to fit. Stitch ends of elastic together and stitch opening closed.
To make hat stem: Cut a cone shape from green felt. Stitch a narrow seam along one side; turn right side out. Stuff with fiberfill. Pin and stitch base of stem to center of hat.
