Raining Romance Cake

The term shower in itself evokes visions of umbrellas and refreshing rain. Through the years as new couples have been showered with gifts and good wishes, the umbrella has become a tradtional shower symbol. The drop flowers and carnations inside the umbrella are among the easiest flowers to make. This project is designed to coordinate with our Raining Romance Favors and Raining Romance Decorations. Project Instructions

Step: 1

In advance, use royal icing and flower nail no. 9 to make the following: 25 tip 102 peach/rose carnations with tip 8 bases; 60 tip 102 lemon yellow/golden yellow apple blossoms with tip 1 white dot centers; 80 tip 224 violet crop flowers with tip 1 white dot centers. Make extras of each to allow for breakage. Place apple blossoms on flower formers. Let all flowers dry and set aside.

Step: 2

Mold candy shower bells according to package directions; refrigerate until firm. To make raindrops, use melted candy in parchment bag fitted with tip 2 and pipe beads on waxed paper. Refrigerate until firm and set aside.

Step: 3

For umbrella base: Bake and cool cake using half ball pan. Place cake on cooling rack over sheet pan; cover with melted candy; tap rack to evenly distribute candy. Let dry. Process can be repeated if thicker finish is desired. When dry, use cake dividing set to divide cake into 8ths. Pipe tip 2 bead lines with melted candy at division points. Let set.

Step: 4

For umbrella handle: With melted candy in bag fitted with tip 2, pipe a 10 x 3/8-inch long handle, hooking to left, on waxed paper. Repeat process for a handle hooking to right. Refrigerate until firm. When firm, attach two handle pieces together with melted candy, trimming edges if needed Add tip 2 bead border around edges. Let set. Make a slit in center of half ball cake and insert umbrella handle. Secure handle with melted candy.

Step: 5

Prepare 2-layer, 12-inch cake for stacked construction. Prepare for rolled fondant by icing lightly with buttercream; cover with fondant. Using cake dividing set, divide cake into 6ths. Attach candy bells at each division point; attach candy raindrops with dots of royal icing. Pipe tip 8 bead bottom border. Secure flowers around bottom edge of cake with dots of icing; add tip 352 green leaves.

Step: 6

To make resting base for umbrella: cut a 4 inch circle from cake board and cover with fondant; secure in center of round cake top with icing. Attach umbrella to cake top to base with icing. Position flowers around edge of umbrella and add tip 352 green leaves. Pipe tip 2 message. Tie ribbon to umbrella handle.
