Collect pine cones from your neighborhood trees. Take them home and clean off any bugs, leaves, or other elements of nature that were meant to stay outside.
Print and cut out the pieces of the Pine Cone Ornament pattern (download below), being sure to cut around the solid lines. Trace each one onto the back of your desired sheet of paper and cut them out. Turn them over (print facing up) and fold the edges down along the dotted lines to make a 90 degree angle with the top.
Before adhering the paper in place, take your pine cone and turn it upside down so that the largest section is on top. While holding the loose end in place with your finger, wrap the monofilament string around the bottom at least twice, tucking it in as close to the center as possible. Once the string goes around twice, bring both ends to the center and attach them in place with hot glue, leaving a long tail (at least 3") of string available at the end. Secure this section in place by adhering a small piece of paper to the top.
While keeping your string in the middle, adhere your printed pieces around the top of the pine cone. Once these are dry, thread your large bead onto the string and tie a jump ring onto the end. Trim excess string.
Finish off your pine cone by adding a section of ribbon underneath your printed paper topper (see image for more details). Attach a hook to your jump ring and hang it on the tree when ready.
