Print and cut out the DCWV® Bird Family Ornament pattern (download below). Choose three coordinating prints, one for each bird. Trace one of each, including the center section, onto each print, as well as your foam core sheet. Turn over the bird print and trace an additional bird onto each coordinating print, as well as your foam core sheet. Cut these out.
Adhere your printed shape onto your foam core bird shapes, one on the front and one on the back. Cut out the center sections so that there is a hole for the “wings.”
With your feathers and paper doilies in hand, decide where you would like to use each accent for the wings. Beginning with the feathers, take a group of them and insert them through your desired slot. Pull them through, ensuring that there is an equal section on each side. Secure them in place with a small line of hot glue along the inside edges on each side of the foam core. Repeat if desired on any additional birds. For your remaining bird(s), take your circle doily and fold it in half. Fold this accordion style (back and forth) until you reach the flourishes on the end. Insert this into the slot and secure in place with a small line of hot glue along the inside edges of the foam core.
To finish the ornament, string each of the birds together with a section of monofilament string. To do this, poke a hole through the center of each bird with a long needle. Next, cut the length of monofilament string desired, allowing enough room to space out the birds on the string and have enough to tie it off at the end. Now, feed the string through the hole on the smallest bird and attach a clear bead flush against the bottom of the bird. Finish that section by attaching a clear bead flush against the top of the bird. Leave approximately 1" of string and attach a clear bead. Feed the end of the string through the bottom of the next bird and out the top. Secure a clear bead here, flush against the top. Leave approximately 1½" of string and attach a clear bead at this point. Feed the string through the bottom of the final bird and out the top, securing your final bead in place flush against the bird.
Leave the end loose or tie a loop at the top, depending on your decorating needs.
Embellish your birds as desired or leave as-is.
