Project Instructions

Step: 1

Prepare the silicone baking mold by spraying a light layer of Mold Release and Conditioner to aid in the release of the cured epoxy from the mold. Lightly wipe excess conditioner off of the mold and allow it to dry for a few minutes.

Step: 2

Create a pleasing arrangement of glass pieces, marbles, or beads in the bottom of each of the cupcake openings. A thin layer of items works better than a deep layer since the epoxy resin is added just to keep everything together. A deep layer will require more epoxy resin and will make the sun catchers quite heavy.

Step: 3

Protect the table surface with plastic sheeting or trash bag. Put on the gloves and safety glasses. Mix no less than two full ounces of EasyCast or EnviroTex Lite exactly according to the instructions in the box. Each sun catcher will require about one ounce of mixed epoxy resin. Pour the epoxy resin all over the items in the silicone mold. Leave in place to cure for 24 hours.

Step: 4

Remove the now cured sun catcher from the mold. Drill a hole about 1/8-inch in from the edge of the sun catcher. Cut a length of fishing line for hanging the sun catcher. Put a crimp bead on the fishing line then feed the line through the drilled hole. Bring the fishing line up through the crimp bead then along side and back up through the bead. Allow about 1-inch of fishing line to extend beyond the crimp bead. Crimp the bead tightly around the fishing line. If you don’t have a crimp bead and crimp tool, simply tie a very secure knot in the fishing line. Finish the opposing end of the fishing line in the same way but leave a loop for hanging over a hook or nail.

Step: 5

Design Options: You may also use sea shells either with or instead of the glass pieces; it’s a great way to continue to enjoy their beauty all year! Faux silk flowers and leaves make very pretty sun catchers, however, they might not lie flat. Parts of the flowers may stick up out of the epoxy and that’s okay but the sun catcher may not be entirely water proof so perhaps display this style indoors or use more resin to cover the exposed material.

Tips

Use photo as a guide and follow manufacturer’s instructions for all products used.

Sun Catchers may be designed for seasonal display and make lovely holiday ornaments. Check Michaels baking department for other shapes of silicone baking dishes.

The epoxy resin must be applied by an adult in a warm, dry, dust free room.
